seriesofnonsequiturs replied to your post “goblin emperor”

sorry don’t mean to blast your page but OMG THE GOBLIN EMPEROR seriously one of the best worldbuilding fantasy books i’ve read - i also love the biracial dynamics like when he walks into the goblin embassy and he almost cries because he finds people who look like him - and also his realization that FRIENDS ARE GOOD and he’s allowed to mutually care about his guards - and his whole thing about his mother and his faith -the question of radical anarchy and THE WHOLE BOOK

omg, that aspect of Maia being an unreliable narrator and reading through the lines to his trauma was so f*ing well-written in the book - not to mention Csevet’s competing trauma too omg

— yes the scene where he’s nearly crying in the goblin embassy was so lovely, all of that is like– *chef’s kiss*

don’t feel bad about blasting my page, i don’t post enough anymore to have so many notification’s that i’m not delighted for more.

And yes– Csevet’s trauma also is like, a layer there, I’m not super articulate at the moment but I am In Agreement.

omg that sleeping system bothered me as well!! i’m like dude, on duty for 12 hours does not an effective guard make

I have now had very serious conversations about this on at least three different social media platforms with like five different people, it seems to me that there’s literally nobody who read the book and was like “seems rational” so like. should we start a letter-writing campaign? “we want the nohecharei to unionize”

Although as I pointed out on Dreamwidth in the last iteration of this discussion, I mean, how many shifts are you really going to want in a job where if your coworkers fuck up even during a shift you’re not present for, you’re expected to commit ritual suicide? It’s gonna keep your pool of applicants small, I think. So like. Balance that.

But what gets me– even if you assume they really do nap while the Emperor’s sleeping, so like, ok, if they do an overnight shift every other night, they can get 2-3 hours sleep apiece while he’s out depending on whether they’ll sleep concurrently or not, and while it’s just a light doze, still it’s not like they’re breaking rocks for 12 hours, and if you assume kind of a monk-like devotion to their work where leisure time becomes important, you still run into a separate issue: you want your guard to have good reflexes, right? and good weapons and fighting skills? that means ongoing practice. When is that supposed to happen, when the vast majority of his shift guarding you is spent standing motionless as part of the scenery??? how are they supposed to stay sharp? even if maza skills are largely mental, they need to be fit, and the guards are gonna really suffer if they can’t work out sometimes. so like. When! When is their cardio! I must know.

beshelar is So Adorable, oh my gosh, your goblin emperor posting has brought me sheer delight

I don’t know why I’m so into Beshelar but he has accidentally become my Relatable Everyman here. He’s just so… like, he’s an uptight kind of jerk, and I Get That, ok.

This whole fanfic I’ve written has literally 0 Maia POV, I decided that was my weird trope that I was gonna stick with, and so it bounces around but it’s got a lot of dear Beshelar realizing he’s in a little bit over his head and attempting to Deal With It.

Also I just wrote Maia semi-losing his virginity from Csethiro’s POV, and it was enormously satisfying, so. I mean, for me, I don’t know how he felt about it, we haven’t really gotten to the reaction part. (cut for slightly nsfw text, describing a male orgasm, and i love Csethiro because she is a fkn nerd, so this is maybe less sexy than you’d think but she is definitely enjoying herself a lot. no this is just a tiny snippet, i promise the rest will be worth waiting for.) I don’t think I could write it from Maia’s POV, I think he’s so shy he’d fade to black even to describe it to himself. But Csethiro has never really balked from anything in her life and isn’t about to start now.

I have no idea what the plot of this fic is but I need it in my life.

I… hit the 30k marker and I think I’ve excavated a plot? Plot’s not my strong suit. LOL. The overarching framework is everyone getting ready for the Imperial wedding.

“We are at our lady’s service,” Beshelar said, a little bit indistinctly, as if embarrassed.

For some reason Maia was beaming at Csethiro as if she had done something noteworthy. “Lieutenant Beshelar has been very generous with his time,” he said, looking fond and perhaps a little embarrassed. “All the nohecharei have been great supports to us, whether in assistance or advice or mere tolerance, in our attempts to mount an effective courtship.”

She laughed, and looked at Beshelar again. “Have you had a great deal of courtship advice?”

Beshelar’s color deepened. “No, my lady,” he said. “Our sole relevant expertise in all of this has been the cipher keys.”

She noticed that the maza was laughing, so she looped him into the conversation. “Then it is Cala Athmaza who is the lady-killer among you,” she said.

Cala’s bright blue eyes went wide behind his spectacles. “No, my lady, our contribution has been the tolerance, mostly,” he said, with admirable poise. “Maza are not taught the arts of love.”

“Then who?” she asked.

“Of all people,” Maia admitted, “the celibate cleric of Csaivo, Kiru Athmaza, has had the most practical advice in most matters.”

“Has she,” Csethiro said, surprised and delighted. “Your household is not very full of married people, is it.”

“Not so far,” Maia said.

It occurred to her that she had never given a great deal of consideration to the lifestyles of nohecharei before, so she turned and regarded Lieutenant Beshelar again, whose color had mostly returned to normal. “Are most nohecharei celibate?” she asked him. “Or is it just the ones who are clerics also?” Beshelar colored magnificently again.

In honor of Roger Stone’s arrest, which is beautifully explained here,

here is a blast from the past: Twitter user Spookperson’s fantastic roast thread of Stone’s Inauguration outfit.
My dude looks like the Babadook

(the Tumblr post has 13 images but I'm only putting 2 here. Please click through, I beg you.)

i should stop it's good to see Rockefeller's corpse out on the town again
The thread resumes the following morning, with another fantastic collection of roasts. I encourage you to click through.

We take what we can get.

(Screenshots taken 1/25/2019, but for the record, I followed this person immediately upon discovering this thread the day it was composed, and have not regretted it.)

(Also here is a Tweet about Roger Stone’s Richard Nixon back tattoo, I shit you not.)

Easy-ish Jamabalaya

So this recipe is here because everything out there seems either authentic but so complicated I could never actually make it like “simmer for an entire day in a cast iron cauldron owned by your grandmother” or so simplified it’s not even jambalaya anymore. So this is my attempt to balance the equation into something doable while still passably authentic. I suppose you can judge how successful I was.

This of course could easily have ingredient changes since it’s mostly things I had on-hand and needed to use before they went bad or wilted. For example if you don’t like bacon flavor you can take it out and add some oil to compensate for the loss of the renderings. Or if you prefer you can use leftover ham instead of chicken or substitute shrimp (though for shrimp you’d have to compensate for the much lower cooking time and add it at the very end). Basically as with all of my recipes it’s anything goes as long as you keep the substitutions in the same basic categories and the spice mix depends on your personal taste and the relative potency of your spices (with the exception of the holy trinity of onion/celery/green pepper as those are essential to cajun-style cooking). But I’m going to end my chatter here because there is nothing I fear more than becoming a recipe blog that buries the actual recipes in stories of suburbia or whatever.

Click thru below for the rest of the recipe and my recap.

Edited to add: I made this! It turned out great! I used shrimp! More info here.

This has been a long time coming, but for months I’ve been unsure how to say what I want to say, without offending anyone. But I need to say it, because quite frankly, this is a huge factor in why I have had so little muse for Breha, and why I haven’t been on here. But here it is:

I hate the way that Breha’s miscarriages, infertility, and depression were erased and replaced by a physical trauma in Leia, Princess of Alderaan. And more than that, I hate the way that much of the fandom response has been praising LPOA for “making Breha a badass now” whereas she was “weak and sickly” before. That is a hugely, hugely damaging standard to put onto women — that the inability to carry a child makes them weak and sickly, that suffering from depression makes you weak and sickly, but that if you survive a physically traumatic accident then that makes you a badass.

Neglected pastures thrive under solar panels

Solar panels could increase productivity on pastures that are not irrigated and even water-stressed, a new study finds. The new study published in PLOS One by researchers at Oregon State College finds that grasses and plants flourish in the shade underneath solar panels because of a significant change in moisture. The results bolster the argument for agrovoltaics, the concept of using the same area of land for solar arrays and farming. The idea is to grow food and produce clean energy at the same time.

Oh! I actually heard about this!! At the Sheep & Wool Festival there was a woman shearing a sheep, so we took Farmkid over to watch, and the woman started telling us that this was a new breed of sheep they were trying to get to catch on in the region, and they were pretty decent for wool but the big thing that they were useful for was grazing under solar installations, because they were small but not super into jumping. Some sheep are too large to fit under the panels, and some are too vertically-inclined and like to climb on them, which can damage them, so these particular sheep were in the sweet spot of being smallish but not great jumpers.

Apparently that’s where the money is. Because otherwise you have to mow the grass under the panels, and ride-on lawn mowers don’t fit. (If you don’t keep the foliage down, it can take over the field and shade your solar panels.)

Shepherds can make most of their profit by hiring their flock out to keep a solar installation grazed down, and it’s extra-great because solar installations tend to have good forage under them.

(what does it say about the state of america’s foodways that you otherwise often can’t make money on raising livestock except in horrifying confinement operations, however? the woman was absolutely clear that the sheep didn’t break even on wool or meat, but if you could get solar gigs you were golden. Isn’t that sad?)

i’m just gonna post all the ways i’ve found so far to get RSS Links They Don’t Want You To Know About from social media sites, because people keep Leaving Tumblr Forever in favor of sites that i’m not going to use

(if you don’t have an rss reader yet just make a feedly account, it takes about one whole minute, if you decide to use a different reader later you can export your whole list, it’s fine)

i've put the entry behind a cut because the crossposter kind of broke it )

I shoved all the text behind a cut: your best bet, while Tumblr still works, is to click the link up at the top to take you to the post on Tumblr, because the crossposting process stripped out all the images and links and fixing it is beyond me at this juncture-- but there's some information in the comments on this post!

Who Does She Think She Is?:

fetus-cakes:

“It took me many years to learn the most important distinguishing factor when trying to decide what criticism to take on board, once you’ve filtered and blocked for bots and fascists. It’s not about tone, and it’s not, for fuck’s sake, about Twitter. It’s about pleasure. Is somebody actively enjoying making you feel like shit? Is driving conscientious people to mental breakdown a really good time for them? Are they getting off on your pain? There’s a word for that, and it’s not “ally.” I understand that bullying can feel pretty damn good, especially if you don’t call it that. I understand that playing the game of trashing feels comfortable and comprehensible, even righteous, when so little else does. But I’ve read all the theory and staggered through all the flame wars and I’ve come to the conclusion that when you get down to it, people who enjoy hurting other people are not worth your time or mine. “

guys this is a very good read, it even touches on how purity culture ruins progressive movements and it was absolutely a problem before tumblr
