i really want to emphasize that if anything, this is the beginning of a fascist movement in the united states and not the end of one. people often look at what fascists did once in state power in order to define what fascism is. this a flawed approach and ignores the characteristics of the fascist movements in their infancy, which is far more analogous to our current situation. both the italian fascist party and nazi party were formed in opposition to liberal democracy and parliamentarian politics. they were necessarily against the existing state and drew a great deal of support from this, because people were frustrated with capitalist liberal democracy and felt that it was inert, corrupt, and ineffective. once in power both italian fascists and nazis never actually destroyed the capitalist state and instead molded it to their own interests while working with capitalists, but the opposition to traditional politics and establishment politicians is a key aspect of the early ideology of fascist movements.

some people in the notes are mad that i didnt mention white supremacy. white supremacy is inextricable from fascism- but this is a post not a dissertation, and its a post about only one characteristic of fascism which is frequently overlooked and should be paid attention to because its happening in front of our eyes. this is a serious development in american right-wing thought that mirrors the historical development of european fascism even before they had totally consolidated their racial politics. look at what right wingers are saying. this is an actual shift from general reactionary and white nationalist politics to fascist politics

theres a lot of talk about forming a new party– again, a significant development that points to a more organized and pointed fascist movement. the nazi party was a new party formed against the other political parties of the weimar republic. of course the republican party is racist (so were the 20th german conservatives) but theyre still bound by general rules of political respectability and at the end of the day, their interests are the interests of the state and they dont want radical right-wing change that would destabilize the state. just look at the reactions from republican politicians about DC right now. a new party would be able to be as openly white supremacist as theyd like, and while im sure theyd be just as supportive of capitalism as the GOP, they would not have to conform to the usual trappings of american politics

some people also took issue with me saying that this is the beginning. i say this for specific reasons about the history of fascism and not to diminish the right wingers that already exist or the history of american racial and colonial violence. the united states is a reactionary country founded on violence, but fascism did not exist until the 20th century and i dont think the united states should be retroactively categorized as fascist. however, there is a cyclical relation between the violence committed under liberal democracies and the violence enacted by fascists. american colonialism, slavery, and imperialism influences american right wing movements today in the same way that italian and german colonialism influenced italian and german fascism. and in the same way, i would not characterize german colonialism as fascism, even though they used the same tactics in their colonies as they did in concentration camps. (the first german concentration camps were actually in africa, not europe) i mean that this is the beginning because it demonstrates specific ideological characteristics of fascism that were not as prevalent before. this is the eruption of a growing american fascist (or whatever youd like to call it because maybe fascism isnt the exactly right term for the united states) consciousness, much greater than small groups of disorganized reactionaries and racists (Your picture was not posted)

So remember how a couple of weeks ago the house two south of mine had a Trump sign on their lawn for … less than the amount of time it took me to go out to dinner?

The house two north of mine has a Biden sign on the lawn now.

10 things you need to know to stop a coup https://wagingnonviolence.org/2020/09/10-things-you-need-to-know-to-stop-a-coup/:

A fascinating article, and good reading if you’re frightened by the President’s recent bluster. I haven’t heard of the author or the org before but it’s all sound, reasonable-sounding advice.

Let’s aim for calm and avoid hyperbole. Be a reliable source by double-checking rumors and spreading high-quality facts. Sure, read social media… but spend some time, you know, doing real things that ground you.

Breathe deeply.

Remember how you handle fear.

Play out scenarios, but don’t become captured by them.

We’re doing this to prepare, just in case.

tarriffs

Welp. Our distributor has been letting it slide until now, but they've just raised their prices on hundreds of items we import from China, because of the tarriffs. Spending today raising prices on many dozens of SKUs on Amazon while my coworker deals with the eBay listings.

The concrete outcome of this stupid dick-slapping is that everything American consumers want to buy is now more expensive, for them. Enjoy that, y'all.

My coworker came in late today because he was addictively listening to Michael Cohen's testimony before Congress. "I almost called in," he said. "I can't stop. I need to know."
I said, well, it's probably being livestreamed somewhere. You could keep listening.
So he is! Of course he is. And that's fine.

Oh my god my blood pressure is through the roof, I can't listen to this. It's absolutely horrifying, and the old white men actually screaming are making me so upset.

I'm trying to find things that take me away from my desk. It's sort of working. I'm in the hallway just now eating lunch. I can still hear it but I can block it out enough to calm down a little.

It is so stressful.

Sigh. Anyway. The tech came this morning to look at our water heater, and determined that a condensation drain was improperly installed, which is why the heater frequently needs to be reset before it will turn on, and why on Sunday it suddenly belched out a huge puddle of water across the basement floor, which I discovered because it audibly dripped into the floor drain. So they're going to have to go away and come back with a diagnostic tool to reinstall that. Meanwhile, the tech did hook back up the oven downstairs that the installers had disconnected, and while they had trouble getting the pilots relit, they eventually determined that the reason the pilots weren't lighting is that it's got an electric ignition.
*eyeroll*

I missed a package from UPS and they now have this thing where they'll drop it at a designated drop point and you can go there and sign for it, and the drop point is a different place every time, which is weird. This time it's a convenience store... directly across the street from my favorite ice cream parlor... so my fat ass is absolutely getting a goddamn sundae after work and maybe that will fix my blood pressure, or at least help cut down on the cortisol stress hormone response I'm absolutely suffocating with.

In honor of Roger Stone’s arrest, which is beautifully explained here,

here is a blast from the past: Twitter user Spookperson’s fantastic roast thread of Stone’s Inauguration outfit.
My dude looks like the Babadook

(the Tumblr post has 13 images but I'm only putting 2 here. Please click through, I beg you.)

i should stop it's good to see Rockefeller's corpse out on the town again
The thread resumes the following morning, with another fantastic collection of roasts. I encourage you to click through.

We take what we can get.

(Screenshots taken 1/25/2019, but for the record, I followed this person immediately upon discovering this thread the day it was composed, and have not regretted it.)

(Also here is a Tweet about Roger Stone’s Richard Nixon back tattoo, I shit you not.)

telesilla:

Gonna go out on a limb and say that we’ll be real sick and tired of the word “likable” by the end of 2020.

My partner and coworker have each separately said “I don’t care who runs, I don’t care what color or gender they are, I just want it to be someone who can beat Tr*mp and who doesn’t rile up the Republicans!”

Finally I said “Anyone who isn’t a white man is going to rile up the Republicans and I don’t think that’s really enough of a reason to say with your mouth that it would be fine for a woman to run but then act with your feet to make sure a woman doesn’t run. At that point you’re just doing it for them. Literally any woman with the ambition to run is categorically unsuited because she’s too ambitious and ambition in a woman is unlikable. Think that the fuck through before you agree with one single commentator saying that.” And then I found the thread where a commentator pulled receipts on a beautiful representative sample of many people who said Hillary was too unlikable and literally held up Warren as a “likable” counterexample who are now saying Warren is “unlikable”. Same goddamn fucking people, each time: uncanny.

Here’s the thread. (link is to a thread by @ashtonpittman on Twitter.)

Listen to yourselves. Ugh.

tweet by @m_tisserand: Please forgive the crudeness but replace “unlikable” with “unfuckable” and every man’s intention with that statement becomes very clear. (9:52am 3 Jan 2019)

and

tweet by @megelison: A woman is unlikable the minute she wants something you don’t want to give her. (1:52 pm 2 Jan 2019)
