dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (Default)
I started unfollowing people on Tumblr, starting with people who were all over my dash, and you'd think it'd be fine, right, like no big deal, right, these are people i'm following on other platforms, i'll be fine, it's--
i couldn't do it! i can't do it, i can't unfollow people. not yet.
i guess i need to back away from tumblr and see that y'all are really here after all before I actually unfollow. It's okay. I can just let Tumblr sit there.
(On a related note, if we're Tumblr mutuals and you suddenly notice I'm not following you, it's because I spent a wild, like, two minutes on there unfollowing people and then panicked and stopped.)

i have a lot of followers on tumblr, y'all. like, over a thousand. it's weird. i don't think i'll get that popular anywhere else. i haven't had any reason for it, lately, haven't gone viral again or posted anything original or interesting. it's weird to see the follower count, though. i took a screenshot so that later in life i could remember.
i know that's small potatoes, there are tons of accounts with tens of thousands of followers. on lj, having 100 followers was a lot. it's just a different culture.

Anyway. As I was poking around yesterday I did manage to confirm that I've got my whole LJ backed up here; it told me the import failed, when I did it in like, 2009, and I just never had the strength to really look at what a mess I was sure it was, but I just looked and yeah, all my baby bullshit from 2001 onward is here. Comments too!!! So.
I did go back and edit my very first post because the first thing I did was list out my roommates' government names and just talk about them like, right out. "I don't like [fullname guy] very much sometimes, he's not as clever as he thinks he is" kind of bullshit. What! Girl, what? What are you-- oh you're just about to turn 21 and you don't really truly know what the Internet is, nobody does, because it's 2001 and also you're dumb as a box of rocks. So anyway. I just pulled real names out of the first couple entries and I'll have to make that an ongoing project. I mean, that shit's been up nearly twenty years now, but it doesn't have to be, and it's time I took responsibility for it.

And I did narrow down that I started posting on Tumblr in 2011, and started cross-posting from there in September of 2015, so I need to go back into my archives here and manually pull out stuff and cross-post it. I'll have to look; I don't know that I had much content here, at first. I also had short-lived accounts on other sites, like MySpace, and I don't think I can archive that content, so it's just going to have to be dead links.

oh my gosh my first tumblr post:
a photograph of the author, a young blonde white woman, duckfacing with a plastic-and-feather tiara on her head
I had been thinking, "2011 isn't that long ago" but then I look at that and i'm like, oh, no, i was quite young then, it's some time ago now. Ha!

game plan

So I have my queue set to run out on Sunday the 16th, and I’m probably going to unfollow everyone I’ve found on other platforms, everyone who isn’t a mutual, everyone who I don’t interact with at all, and I’m just going to leave it so my Tumblr dash is those of you who haven’t given me any alternate contact but who I don’t want to lose track of. So I’ll pare that way down; I’ll probably start unfollowing people soon. @unicornduke mentioned how much time it frees up to no longer scroll Tumblr endlessly taking in the firehose of reduplicated constantly-updating shit, and I admit, my DW Reading List pretty much fills that niche in a quarter of the time and about a thousandth of the wank. (I had my Tumblr dash pretty curated but I still saw a lot of you noble souls leaping to defense of people who were getting wanked about, and that’s noble, but not strictly necessary, in terms of picking battles, for me to be reading the defenses, you know? For the record I’ve had the phrase “q slur” blocked for like two years now, and if any of y’all used it unironically I had y’all blocked too, for fuckin’ real.)

After the 17th I’ll probably take a little Tumblr break, and then re-evaluate– how many of you all are left here, whether the site is really still worth looking at, etc.

I do know my presence on Pillowfort will probably be minimal. The recent clarification to their TOS has pretty well convinced most of the knowledgeable veterans I know that these people don’t know what the fuck they’re doing. Putting anything subject to interpretation right out there into the TOS is just demanding wank. And I’m tired, and I don’t want to see it. Literally anyone who has done this before could have told them not to do this, and there they are doing it: not only do they not know what the fuck they’re doing, they also can’t even take fucking advice about it. So forget that. It’s a shame, I was interested to see where it went, but I don’t need any more drama factories, I’m old and tired and fucking sick of the way people like to police women’s bodies and sexual expression especially. You’re really gonna fling yourself into the aftermath of “female-presenting nipples” with a fuckass stupid phrase like “appear to be underage” followed up with “discretion of the moderator”– oh my god it’s like none of the struggles which have come before ye even happened? We are not allowed to learn from history, we are only going to assume that we know better than those dumb old biddies. Fantastic. (And it’s not just the TOS… it’s things like accessibility, best practices, the rest of it. Christ on a popsicle stick. Nope.)

Some of y’all, that’s the contact info I have for you, so I’ll poke in there a while, but like. I’m not gonna get invested just to watch it burn down when the inevitable bad-faith exploitation of “discretion of the moderator” meltdown occurs.

There’s an untapped pinup genre: beefy hunks with strong hands looking puzzled by small electronics. Kinda like scantily clad busty chicks making the oops face with power tools, but the opposite.

(reblogging this from myself from 2011 as i go through to archive my old posts, and i stand by this underappreciated gem of an insight)

I do not recollect! Alas, you’re not the first to ask! I went to the Sheep and Wool Festival’s website to see if there was a list of what farms were there, but I couldn’t find one, only vendors– and it wasn’t a vendor, it was a farmer, so. Oh, here are the exhibitors– but none of the sheep breeds mentioned are familiar.

I wrote up what breeds I did see at the Sheep and Wool festival here, but I did not remember even at the time which breed it was that the woman was talking about. I know it wasn’t any of the ones I mention specifically in the paragraph toward the bottom of that entry!

Either my mother or sister took the woman’s business card, so I’ll drop them both a line and ask if they still have it. That’s the only lead I’ve got, I’m afraid!

The sheep she was shearing might have been pale brown, but mostly all I have to go on is her description, which did match the sheep in front of her– smallish, not jumpy, sheep-looking sheep. And whatever it was, it was a hybrid cross of something they were trying to establish as its own breed.

For real though, if you’re pondering a solar installation and looking for sheep to graze under it, you might be better off approaching it from “what kind of sheep do people keep around here” because climate may be more of a determining factor. Within that subset, you could also look for smaller breeds, and ask the farmers whether they tend to be jumpers/climbers, or not. (The more wild-type sheep are probably more climby, so like, Jacobs and Icelandics are not gonna be your answer.)
