dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (Default)
I just went to add an image to a post and in the image uploader on DW it was like "you're over your quota!" and I was like what i never use this thing, so I went and looked at the image uploader and
oh
I'm at 214% of my quota, in fact.
How???
Well every single time IfTTT crossposts for me, it uploads an "this image not found" image that it generates itself, if there's no image in the post, and if there is an image in the post, it uploads that one instead.

So I have 255 pages of identical "image not found" images to delete manually, so. I've been at it a couple of hours already.

Just-- notice that, and maybe delete them as you go, before you wind up with the bullshit I'm currently dealing with. (Yes, there's a bulk image editor, and it loads ten images on a page and you have to check each one individually, hit 'delete', then load a new page, so it is Not Fast.)

So I have my queue set to run out on Sunday the 16th, and I’m probably going to unfollow everyone I’ve found on other platforms, everyone who isn’t a mutual, everyone who I don’t interact with at all, and I’m just going to leave it so my Tumblr dash is those of you who haven’t given me any alternate contact but who I don’t want to lose track of. So I’ll pare that way down; I’ll probably start unfollowing people soon. @unicornduke mentioned how much time it frees up to no longer scroll Tumblr endlessly taking in the firehose of reduplicated constantly-updating shit, and I admit, my DW Reading List pretty much fills that niche in a quarter of the time and about a thousandth of the wank. (I had my Tumblr dash pretty curated but I still saw a lot of you noble souls leaping to defense of people who were getting wanked about, and that’s noble, but not strictly necessary, in terms of picking battles, for me to be reading the defenses, you know? For the record I’ve had the phrase “q slur” blocked for like two years now, and if any of y’all used it unironically I had y’all blocked too, for fuckin’ real.)

After the 17th I’ll probably take a little Tumblr break, and then re-evaluate– how many of you all are left here, whether the site is really still worth looking at, etc.

I do know my presence on Pillowfort will probably be minimal. The recent clarification to their TOS has pretty well convinced most of the knowledgeable veterans I know that these people don’t know what the fuck they’re doing. Putting anything subject to interpretation right out there into the TOS is just demanding wank. And I’m tired, and I don’t want to see it. Literally anyone who has done this before could have told them not to do this, and there they are doing it: not only do they not know what the fuck they’re doing, they also can’t even take fucking advice about it. So forget that. It’s a shame, I was interested to see where it went, but I don’t need any more drama factories, I’m old and tired and fucking sick of the way people like to police women’s bodies and sexual expression especially. You’re really gonna fling yourself into the aftermath of “female-presenting nipples” with a fuckass stupid phrase like “appear to be underage” followed up with “discretion of the moderator”– oh my god it’s like none of the struggles which have come before ye even happened? We are not allowed to learn from history, we are only going to assume that we know better than those dumb old biddies. Fantastic. (And it’s not just the TOS… it’s things like accessibility, best practices, the rest of it. Christ on a popsicle stick. Nope.)

Some of y’all, that’s the contact info I have for you, so I’ll poke in there a while, but like. I’m not gonna get invested just to watch it burn down when the inevitable bad-faith exploitation of “discretion of the moderator” meltdown occurs.

Ugh I have just thrice in a row learned some hard lessons about the auto-restoring drafts function, namely, DON'T FUCKING DO IT. It helpfully says "autosaved draft at 8:37 pm" so when I accidentally clicked away from the page, and it asked if it should restore the draft, I said "sure" because I had been watching the autosaves this time and was like oh it's definitely got the eight paragraphs I just wrote, I watched it update as I was going, so no worries, it's got this--
NOPE! It restored the saved draft from the LAST time it deleted all my shit, which was at about 5:02 pm, so fuck that.
ANYHOW. On to the actual post I've been trying to make:

So re: my last post, Can You Blacklist Tags, the answer is no, but do not despair!! Huge shoutouts to [personal profile] rmc28  for linking to this great article by [personal profile] kore : How To Blacklist Tags.

The short version is, 1) you have to be a paid user, 2) you have to make a subscription filter (it's like the privacy filters you can make to determine which of your subscribers can see various of your entries? which will make sense once you use the site a little, I promise), and then 3) within that filter, you find the user(s) who post content you don't want to see, and you find the tag(s) they use to indicate that content, and then you exclude those tags, so that going forward, when you view that filter on your reading page, you won't see posts about X by that user.

It seems like that would never work, but bear in mind that on DW 1) you can use cuts much more fluidly, 2) there's no reblogging so every bit of content on your page was posted by the person who published it so there are no surprises and they've had to consider it more fully, and 3) people really do tend to use tags for organization instead of art, here, so it's really likely things will be tagged with useful indicators.

So. I bought a subscription, because I'd been wanting to anyway.
Now, I'm not really a generous person, but if you're someone who relies heavily on Tumblr's blacklisting to curate your life, and you've just jumped ship over here with me, and you're kind of inwardly freaking out-- listen, hit me up, I will gift you some paid time to see if you can make this site work. I don't have a lot of money but I have this gift card from work that has assorted spare change left on it left over from me buying myself paid time and I have points, apparently, to spare, so. I will be delighted to sponsor somebody's journey to Dreamwidth acceptance. Just hit me up.

The real reason I had been planning to get a subscription, though, is because I fucking missed making polls on LJ and I'm going to make them here all the goddamn time. So, hold onto your butts.

(I used to hand-code them on LJ, too, because i was a twit, but I'm rusty, so take me away, Poll Creation Wizard.)

1) i fell on the ice again on the way in to work because it was 33 last night and 19 this morning and so the ground is fucking glass and knives, ugh. Nine years as a roller derby skater means I know how to fuckin' fall, all right, but that's got some additional downsides-- I'm pushing forty and have a dodgy hip for some reason, and also I muscle-memory-drilled how to fall on kneepads, so my take-a-knee reflex is less great in regular clothes. Also that ankle I sprained in October is not 100% yet and I probably need to look up some physical therapy exercises because it's not going to go back to normal on its own, is it?

2) There's got to be a way to blacklist tags on DW so I don't see them. Like, that's what tags are for, right? To find what you're looking for and avoid what you hate?
Similarly, is there a way, if you're importing a whole bunch of old entries, to make them not show up on reading pages? I'm seeing huge swathes of somebody's stuff that's backdated from years ago, but it's still showing up clearly chronologically in the order reposted, not in the order backdated, and that's a bummer. I've had to unsubscribe, but I figure, give it a day or two and I'll try resubscribing. But in the meantime-- if I import old entries, I don't want to do that! And if it's repetitively about a fandom I actively hate, if I blacklist it I won't see it, right, so the lion's share of the problem would be gone, right?
Only I don't understand how to blacklist on Dreamwidth. And I saw someone mention a "show on reading page" checkmark you could untick for backdated entries, right, only I don't see that fucking anywhere and I think I must have imagined reading that.
It would be a great feature if it existed!
(If you think you know who you are, that I unfollowed, don't worry, I'm gonna resubscribe. If you want to drop a line letting me know when you're done reposting old entries, that'd be fine too, but I'll actually physically write myself a note to check back, it's okay. I'm not like, annoyed, I just really need not to have my reading list be four pages of old essays about a fandom I strongly dislike, especially right now when I've just gone on a huge subscribing spree and so have no idea who's on here and what they normally do.)

(Listen, I've had Doctor Who blacklisted on Tumblr since 2012 and it's the only reason I stayed on that site, and you wouldn't believe how much Doctor Who shit I've still scrolled past. The nerds I love love that show but I absolutely fucking do not and I just don't want to hear about it, for no particular reason but like, it annoys the shit out of me, and that's fine, right? That's the curb-cutter effect for trigger warnings, right? I literally never want to see what's his name's face ever again in my life, I don't care that they've got a woman I like doing it now, I don't care about the show and just don't want to know.) (No, that's not the fandom in question at the moment but it's there for the record.)

3) I reread a bunch of my old fic last night while the cat was on my arm so I couldn't type. I used to be pretty decent at pacing. Clearly, it's a skillset I possess. I need to, like. Focus. I don't know what to do.
Just keep plugging away, I guess. I need a finished story to edit, is what I need. That's my current goal. So I gotta keep plugging away on that. Even if the pacing is awful and it's dragging and the whole thing is too long and a mess, I need to finish it and get it where it was going and then I can revisit and decide what to do. Having it half-finished is useless.

Well, anyway, I’ve manually written an entry on DW to link to from here.

This is me on Dreamwidth, and it links to my Livejournal there.

I signed up for DW in 07 when everyone else did– or shortly thereafter– and I just used the same handle I had on LJ, and in a hilarious moment of Tumblr-ness I literally just saw a post last week on Tumblr about how racist the phrase “dragonlady” is to Asians, so I’m going to shuffle my feet and look down and say I signed up for LJ in ‘01 with a handle I’d come up with as a teenager and it’s a reference to a character in a fantasy novel I wrote when I was twelve and I had basically never seen a movie so I actually had no idea there was a racist trope of scary Asian ladies?

Anyway. It’s, that’s a thing. I’ve never successfully figured out how to use DW, and I’m about a thousand percent sure I’m doing it wrong because there’s literally no one on my reading page there, and surely *someone* would have updated. But if you subscribe to me I will attempt to subscribe back. And I would love to continue longer discussions over there. I miss having a conversation, I’m so lonely here, and now I can’t even comment on posts, or get comments, and I’m too self-conscious to send Asks and I don’t like to reblog.

You can also say hi on LJ if that’s a site you use, it’s linked to from there, I sort of check both intermittently. I don’t know, I just don’t, I’m awful at technology but I’m just so lonely. I spent my young adulthood in Livejournal’s heyday and I’ve never recovered from its loss.

Thanks to the power of technology, there is finally a way to cross post from Tumblr to Livejournal and/or Dreamwidth.

HOW TO HOW DO

Get yourself a free account at IFTT (if this, then that) https://ifttt.com

Then go to this recipe: http://ift.tt/1hnMOl8 and activate it. You’ll need to connect your Tumblr account to IFTTT, as well as your email - I’m using Gmail so I connected my relevant email account.

Then, and this is how I do it, I set up my Dreamwidth account for the postings, because  I have DW crosspost all entries to LJ automatically.

In DW: Go to your account settings at http://ift.tt/1KtRNfZ, then select Mobile:

In the box, enter whatever email address you connected in IFTTT. For your pin, go crazy but note that DW doesn’t save capital letters in the pin.

Then string together your account name with your pint in the following form: username+pin@post.dreamwidth.org.

Now head back to your IFTTT recipe box:

And enter in that username+pin@post.dreamwidth.org into your address bar.

YOU’RE SET TO CROSSPOST.

A word of caution: This recipe will crosspost EVERYTHING on Tumblr, both your new content and  all your reblogs. You can turn off the automatic push in the recipe’s top right-hand corner:

And then turn it on just before you make a super-important post. Like this one.

You can also cross-post just those posts with a specific tag. Draft workflows are

Reblogging for the crossposting-for-tags

Oh I really like the tags idea but I just plain don’t understand it. Surely there’s got to be a place where you tell it your tag? The word “tag” appears in the body of the email, but I’m just not confident enough with what actual text I’m to replace. I’d have to disable the thing I wept blood to make work, and I just can’t face that, is what it boils down to.

I feel like I used to be smarter about these sorts of things. Either I’m getting timid in my advanced age, or I’m just really beaten-down at the moment.

Sorry. I don’t think anyone actually reads my LJ or DW anyway, so they’re just going to have to put up with everything getting crossposted. I literally actually don’t think anyone’s left over there so it doesn’t matter.

By the way. Anyone, I’m dragonlady7 on LJ and DW, and I do post things exclusively over there sometimes. I’m experimenting, still. (For the record: photo posts just paste any captions into the text, and only send over one photo; if you reblog, all prior comments are just mushed in as if you wrote all of them, with no demarcation whatsoever to indicate multiple authors. That’s my results so far.)
