Finished editing Iceland photos. Here’s one from my camera. I can’t figure out how to post more than one at once right now so you’ll just have to get them one at a time for a bit. This is New Year’s Eve at a bonfire by the shore in Reykjavik, with fireworks going off next to the fire.
Believe it or not, there were no reported fireworks injuries that night, according to Reykjavik’s emergency services.

I absolutely hyperfocused and wikipedia-spiraled at work today except it wasn’t wikipedia, it was some bizarre website about Norse history, and it was only after I’d been reading article after article that I manually truncated the URL to find out what the fuck I was binging on and discovered it was the personal website of some weeaboo only for Viking stuff kinda guy, but it had really good cited sources and a ton of original photography and research on it, and anyway. I also watched a bunch of videos on turf building construction.

No, I’m not going to build a Viking longhouse to replace the yurt, but only because I don’t fancy trying to figure out what kind of turf would be suitable in this ecosystem.

And no I’m not going to write a novel about Vikings but I am absolutely going to write a fantasy novel loosely based on the colonization of Iceland only set, like, in the future. Adding it to the list.

I also finished editing and posting all the Iceland photos but I opted to make a comprehensive album that contains all the photos and therefore it’s not actually like… artistic merit like I usually do for photo selection, so there are some stunners but there are also like videos of the back of an airplane seat and stuff. I tried to make them chronological, that was my concession to logic. I’m just going to post a few of the highlights one at a time on Instagram probably.

I have done all of the cooking this week but at least dude has done several of the dishes?

I’ve seen posts about chore charts going around and I’m seriously contemplating getting one. Not just because so much of the shit I do is absolutely invisible to him, but also because I think surely he must do more around the house than I realize, and if we put it on a chart I wouldn’t feel so miserably alone in what feels like my single-handed attempt not to live like an animal all the time.

I need to buy myself a new dayplanner to replace the one I had actually been intermittently using for ten months when it caught fire. I still have its charred corpse shedding cinders onto the back porch carpet, I’ll have to steel myself and discard it soon but I want to look and see if there’s anything left but I can’t bring myself to so it’s just ashes everywhere. Sigh. (Yes, I found identifiable charred pages in the wreckage and salvaged them but that was really mostly just self-torturing of me.)

I’ve never used a dayplanner past March before, but it almost feels like a judgement against me to have this happen to it that one time.
(That’s not true, I had a dayplanner in Scotland, and lost it on a train, along with every bit of journaling I’d done about my first romantic relationship, and that was just really sad, and it took me a few years to try to pick up the habit again and by then I’d forgotten how that sort of thing works.)

I spent a bunch of time in Iceland driving, unexpectedly, and so the photography was left up to [profile] zobar2 much of the time. He was a bit self-conscious about it and mostly just held the shutter button down, and I was busy driving, but I did art-direct a few shots. Like this one. “The sky looks amazing behind us,” I said, sparing a glance for the rearview mirror as I tried not to drive into a fjörd. “I can’t get a shot through the rear windshield,” he said, harried. “Don’t,” I said. “Use the mirror.”
So here we are.
(The thing about driving along fjörds is that you change direction a lot so you get to see sunrises and sunsets [which in midwinter are concurrent, and in the south] from many angles. Still managed to get the sun straight in my eyes on the two occasions it actually appeared on the entire trip. That photo’s coming up later.)

I had no idea who Emrys was when I started reading “Misethere” and “Blooded Crown” and that didn’t matter at all. Sublime storytelling.

Some of the canon events for Emrys are really strange, like the time he spent as a hedgehog. Yeah. You read that right. Hedgehog. I find I’m better off in the world(s) created by fanwriters.

You’re right, canon probably has no real bearing on being able to appreciate those stories. I honestly wish I, as a fanfic author, were better about that– a lot of my work depends heavily on having consumed the source material. Not all of it, but. I’ve definitely read fic for more things than I’ve ever consumed the canon of.

Not like you can figure out what’s going on watching the series either.

Well, I’ll read it at some point, likely. I’m not really looking for any kind of fandom to hyperfixate on, but I really do like to have at least something I’m interested in fannishly so I can have some investment in the random shit scrolling by on Tumblr. Lemme tell you, it’s a bummer that podcasts are entirely inaccessible to me, categorically, because there’s tons of content about them, but they’re a giant Nope.

So the wifi at work is like, punishingly slow. Has been all week. I’ve tried restarting it, nothing helps, it just is what it is.

The wired-in Internet is fine, so we can mostly do our jobs without noticing, and since my coworker browses Facebook on his computer not his phone, he doesn’t particularly notice.

I have my personal laptop and while waiting for things I look at Tumblr on it. It’s all blank spaces where images should be, and since none of you savages use any kind of image descriptions, it’s just wide open whitespace with occasional completely out of context commentary, which is sort of Dadaist but mostly not worth looking at.

Instagram on my phone is also mostly blurry things that don’t load. I’ve realized I follow too many people; the vast majority of them I’m like oh good this lets me skip Stories faster. Hm, I should re-evaluate. Except I do sometimes get something I value out of those things… I’m not good at unfollowing.

But what’s really hilarious is that our printer works over wifi, and so everything seems to be working just fine except when we need to print something, and since my coworker so rarely uses the wifi he has forgotten every time, and every time starts theorizing about what could be wrong.

“Our wifi is choked,” I remind him. He doesn’t believe me, and tries to give me troubleshooting advice until he gets distracted, and then literally twenty minutes later the printer finally spits something out and he’s all astonished because he’s forgotten about it.

It helps that he just mostly doesn’t pay attention to me, LOL. Fortunately I’m the one who’s printing stuff, so I don’t do something silly like try several times to print the thing. I just wait, now.

Here’s a [profile] zobar2 photo from our drive from ísafjördur airport to Heydalur. It’s like 3pm so the light has just shifted from sunrise to sunset, and we had no idea what we were getting into. As I was editing I liked this one for the composition, and cropped it slightly to frame the road curve, and tweaked the color to bring up everything that wasn’t twilight-blue.
The road, highway 61, is named Djupveger or The Deepway, and we didn’t know it yet but we were going to get to experience almost all of it.
