dragonlady7: self-portrait but it's mostly the DSLR in my hands in the mirror (Default)

ok ok enough sewing. back to writing.

two tiny snippets from today, and then I’m off to finish the formatting on the next chapter of Can’t Go Home This Way, because I need to post that on-schedule. :)

1) Full Of Grace: He reached up with both hands and pulled the goggles off, then shook his hair out of his face and sat back, looking straight into the camera with his whole face. The lighting was decent, the camera in-focus. His eyes were a light but vibrant blue, with crinkles in the corners. “The only lies I’ve told have been for the purposes of hiding who I am. But I think the time’s come to stop messing around.”

He blinked, and smiled sadly. “That should be plenty of time for facial recognition software to do its thing,” he said. “I’ve kept my face off the screen for that reason. But there’s other footage out there of me. Go ahead, confirm the match. I’m the Winter Soldier, the real one. It’s been fun pretending, but I’m not the kind of person who really gets to have, you know, fun in his life.” He gave a little twitch of his eyebrows at the word fun, and his smile went bittersweet.

2) Three Worlds Travelers: Chime tried kind of hard not to let on that part of the bit that really did it for him about being with Moon was knowing that Moon could kill him without thinking twice. Even if Chime fought back, which he kind of knew how to do now, mostly thanks to Moon. He wouldn’t stand a chance— not just because Moon was bigger, and more powerful all the time. No, Moon was ruthless and intense and did not make mistakes in fighting.

And so sometimes, maybe, Chime kind of… maybe let himself think about what it would be like if Moon wanted to hurt him, just a little bit. Moon didn’t, of course, and part of it, Chime told himself, part of the charm of it was that he knew that, of course. Moon would never hurt him.

the thread might be slipping out of place inside and causing the thread not to move forward or to draw tight when it does, and then it comes out of the needle. or it might need to be greased

I mean… mostly it works. So it sews normally and is fine. Just, what was happening before, and what happens occasionally now, is that I’m sewing along, and then the needle’s not threaded but I’m still sewing along, and the thread’s still all one piece, from when it was working to now that it’s not working, and somehow in the middle the needles uninvolved themselves.

And through all that, there was no interruption in the thread. Somehow, without breaking, the thread has come out of the solid needle eye. I don’t understand how it could possibly do that. The thread is in the work, then it’s sticking out of the work, and the thread is unbroken back to the spool, but the thread is no longer through the needle. It’s not a self-threading needle, there’s no gap; the eye is unbroken. I cannot fathom how it’s possible. Unless somehow the thread breaks, and then– ~*magic*~– continues into the work somehow, and pulls more along somehow, so that I can’t see where it was broken when I look later??? I just?? Like, there’s a tangle, sort of, where it stopped working properly– is it that the thread’s gotten broken but instantly, like, I dunno, tied itself off in the work somehow, and keeps moving along?

Since I wrote that post this morning I spent probably six hours sewing, and sewed yards and yards and yards of fabric, and it didn’t happen again. So there’s nothing wrong with the machine.

But it happened in the first place, and that baffles me. The needles were threaded, I was sewing along, it’s not like I just started off and they came unthreaded– the needles were threaded, there was thread through them, all of the machine’s threads were held in my hand and didn’t pull backward into the machine–  and then the needles weren’t threaded, and the thread was not broken at any point between having been through the needles and then not being through them. It’s like a magic trick. It’s weird!

weird

THANK you that is all I am saying!

I firmly believe it’s some form of dark witchery. I don’t know anything about witchery but I want to know, so until I learn I’m just suspecting the worst.

Maybe I need to leave tiny teacups out for the serger fairies or something. I know sewing machines hunger for blood, but you mustn’t give them any. I wonder what the analogue is for sergers.

I hope it’s not blood they want, they have knives.

(I got a needle through my finger from my old straight-stitch machine Matilda. I gave her away, in the end; I never could trust her after that. I kept the broken needle after I pulled it out with pliers, figuring there ought to be some sort of ritual or something, but I never figured out what kind of ritual I should do. I hope she doesn’t claim any more victims. Once they’ve tasted flesh, you know?)

It feels like it’s more than a week since I’ve done this. Did I miss a week or get stuck in a time-dilution field?

CHAPTER UPDATE: Can’t Go Home This Way. Chapter 4, All I Have To Do Is Survive.

(They’re not song titles/lyrics anymore because Poe doesn’t sing in this story. Ehhhhhh? Also finding songs had begun to stress me out. I’m actually into a lot of genres of music and a lot of them are not suitable for this purpose, so it’s been a relief to listen to something else in the car once in a while.)

Summary: Finn plans a mission, rescues a TIE pilot, and gets his way. Poe and Rey hatch a perhaps cunning, but definitely desperate plan. And Kes… well, he never was too good at getting droids to do what he wanted.

“Don’t be a piece of shit,” Kes said to the loading droid.

“Instructions unclear,” the droid said in Basic, one of its pre-recorded response phrases– the only one of its response phrases Kes had yet heard it utter. Kes took his patience in both hands.

“You,” he said, enunciating as clearly as he could, “stack these no more than three high.”

“Instructions unclear,” the droid said.

Kes considered how many pieces he could dismantle the droid into if he just started hitting it with this wrench.

Yo this is what it looks like when you just now send your APS film from 1995 in for processing.

but… that kinda looks pretty in a way….

Well, tons of people shoot with expired film on purpose. it’s called lomography and you see it a lot from hipsters. I develop my fair share of it. The reason is that you do get these color shifts and unexpected effects.

But uh. If you just want your baby photos, well. I had to subtract 10 magenta in my little preview interface in order to make them recognizable as human babies.

So it all depends what you’re going for really.

Another spectacular chapter! I save them for when I’m trapped under a baby and they’ve been a lifesaver.

Ha ha oh man! I am an occasional victim of being trapped under a baby. Less so now that she’s old, but it still happens. Having something to do is invaluable. To the point that my sister’s baby started bringing her mother her phone whenever she wanted to nurse because she knew that was when Mommy caught up on Facebook, LOL.

Chain drive of the C41 machine’s dryer. In three minutes if the film isn’t out I gotta go in after it. Wish this damn thing wasn’t so busted. I spend a lot of time staring at this thing and pleading with it.
