I am much recovered. I just ate dinner and it’s actually not in any way uncomfortable. Good for me!
I was thinking, today, though, that the current situation is very sort of… egalitarian, in that it’s so deeply fucked-up that those of us who’ve been following politics for decades have absolutely 0 more of an idea of what the fuck is going on and what might happen than those of us who are young and new to the scene. It’s. It’s a. It’s a frantic look on the bright side, here.
I have no idea what’s even happening and what to do about it. You really did used to be able to rely on Republicans and on conservatives in general to be very America-first, very unforgiving of anything that didn’t at least pay lip service to the armed forces and to military might and to Christian values– and especially very anti-Soviet, death to the Russians, and so forth– and what we’re in now is just–
utter baffling nonsense. The Republicans have fallen all over themselves to kiss the ass of a man who has pretty unashamedly sold himself wholesale to Russia and accepted their help in getting himself elected, is non-apologizing for it all over, and they’re not– at all dismayed about that? A man who openly abused Army Veterans, who has basically never attended church of any kind or even pretended to– I mean, raping the environment and openly stuffing the pockets of billionaires is, at least, classic Republican behavior, but the other stuff used to be complete dealbreakers, and now is just– fine, super fine, because he’s racist and that’s all they actually wanted.
The core values of the Republican party, apparently all along, could just be boiled down to “racism”, and you could just throw the rest out the window, and we were all just deluding ourselves.
Meanwhile, the President-Elect has committed treason on an order of magnitude I’ve literally never beheld before. And I’ve read a lot of history books. This has just plain never happened before.
We have had some unutterably wacky shit happen before here in these United States and none of it has ever come close to this.
And no major media outlet wants to be the one to call a spade a spade because you bet your ass that if that’s not enough and somehow, the fuckin’ spade prevails, they’ll be actually arrested because the rule of law no longer applies and our Constitution is apparently now a historical curiosity, all reprints of which will be shortly repurposed as toilet paper since they’ll serve no other purpose and after Armageddon (which is now pretty much the stated goal of the incoming administration), what else would such a thing be useful for?
And Republican voters, incredibly, seem completely fine with this, and I’m wondering if the next news story to break is going to be the revelation of some kind of mind-control device????
It’s just. Stranger than fiction. I was half-convinced I was hallucinating it, as i sat there on the floor next to the toilet scrolling through Twitter in numb disbelief.
(I mean. I’d been saying ever since whatever news story alleging it that Trump is Putin’s puppet– Hillary said so, I’m not original– but I never figured the CIA would actually say so. I never figured they’d actually find anything.)
I only had my phone because I’d been using it as a flashlight to find somewhere to puke in the dark, but man. I was sort of sorry I had it. It was the only thing going on at that hour on the Internet, and I really. I didn’t need that.
