Feeling so shitty and generally incompetent that I went to take a nap to escape myself for a bit. I haven’t been sleeping well at all, so it was a welcome effort. I’d managed finally to ungrit my teeth from my personal failings and general dread enough to doze, but then Dude came in and yelled at me because he’s cranky and is making dinner anyway, and somehow me being awake too would make this less hard on him?
I don’t know, but now I’m simmering furious as well as stymied on basically all fronts, and if you recall, I am computerless, so I can’t escape as I normally do by writing, so I guess I’ll just sit here and be fucking miserable all night!

Oh :) he’s taking a nap now :) it turns out that for months apparently when I’ve been telling myself I was just being paranoid that he was mad at me he really was mad at me :) the whole time for real :) Those little smileys are me losing my goddman mind :) Everything is great :)

Dug out my antique iBook or whatever they were called, back in the day. It still boots up and I can get Gdocs to open, but if I try to edit anything it crashes. So… read-only. OK cool.
So I’m rereading the bodhi/cassian thing and I can’t find any narrative arc or real character beats and I’m pretty sure it’s about 25k of nothing, which is truly unfortunate.
So, that didn’t cheer me up much. On the upside tho, the cat is snoring on my lap and it’s very cute.
January is really hard for me every year and I’ve made it through another one if I can just last a couple more hours. This one was at least largely terrible for external reasons so I guess that’s some variety.
I’m so tired. I’m so empty. Nothing I do does any good. I’m not fishing for reassurances at the moment, it just really feels like an objective fact.
I did tally up this month’s writing today. I wrote every day but the 1st, and excluding today, which I can’t count because dlno computer, I’m at 40987 words this month.
They’re all fine words I’m sure, but the order they’re in, I’m just not sure about.
Oh well, it’s better to do than not do I suppose.

This was written for Facebook, but I wanted to post it here too, if it will help somebody:
You see a lot of people popping up in your posts that you don’t know, or who are friends of friends. They may actually be white supremacists/Nazi sympathizers/all lives matter racists who spout that rhetoric, they may just want to argue with every word you say, but they are all Trump supporters, and the only thing they have in common is that they want you to shut up.
It can be scary to speak out about your feelings and fears at any time, let alone when you’re facing an actual rise of open fascism. These people are there to stop you, to scare you. It’s not a conspiracy. They’ve been indoctrinated by Fox News, by sites like Breitbart, by their families, they don’t need a conspiracy, they know what to do without any outside help. They want you to shut up. They just want you to be nice, be kind, don’t talk about politics, just shut your damn mouth, lie down, and let us do what we want. They want you to shut up.
All I have is advice, and that’s to not shut up. I’ve been abused, I’ve been bullied, and I can tell you that there is nothing more satisfying than to keep talking when a bully wants you to shut up. If you don’t know this person and you don’t want them in your posts arguing constantly, ban them from your Facebook. It’s easy and fun. If a friend wants you to shut up, that’s harder. But if someone wants you to shut up about your fears, when they want you to shut up about politics when your friends and relatives and innocent strangers are being hurt or put in danger of their lives by those politics, then that person is not your friend. It’s a hard thing to learn, but it’s true.

I almost posted a link to this the other day, but it says 2018 on the top, the address is 2018, it says 2018 all over it, and I keep asking and nobody can answer me why it has next year’s information on it.

Is it the run-up to the elections then? Is that what it is? I don’t know!

Apparently it really is a list of upcoming (i.e., in 2017) public appearances by Senators, which seems really useful.

I did a quick scan of it and there’s no information about any of my representatives, in any way I can find. But some people’s surely are in here.

This is the very first resource I’ve seen to back up that goddamn viral post that was telling us all that writing letters is stupid garbage and nothing means anything, so it’s nice that there’s something positive to point toward for the frustrated non-phone-users among us.

I don’t understand it, but I haven’t seen any links yet on Tumblr to this, so I’m putting it out. Check it out, it’s a great idea.

Not to keep harping on this, but when it comes to privacy versus freedom of information the US is absolutely freedom first. And that is useful in some cases and disastrously harmful in others but I honestly don’t think we can do without it at this point.

In the US, we expect every presidential candidate to release their taxes as part of their campaign. (Compare with the UK, where David Cameron was the first ever PM to release his taxes, because he was implicated in the Panama Papers.) We require by law that nominees to Cabinet- and sub-Cabinet-level positions in the Treasury Department, Social Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and other agencies submit their tax returns to the Senate, where they are reviewed by the relevant Senate committee.

We assume that if they aren’t willing to be open with the American people, they must be lying or concealing something. And that mindset replicated throughout our whole culture. America still struggles with responding to the threats of data mining and state surveillance because we associate “privacy” with “hiding”. “The innocent have nothing to fear,” runs like a major artery through our justice system and through our national psyche, and it makes it hard to move the needle on a lot of issues.

But it also means we can can say those goddamn words really well.

(Of common law countries, the discovery stage of American litigation is the longest and most permissive in what documents/information you can request from the opposing party. Because if you don’t have anything to hide, what’s the harm in looking! Our defamation laws are very friendly to newspapers and media, since “Truth” is an absolute defense against slander or libel—however harmful to someone’s reputation, no one can be punished for sharing what is factual.

The innocent have nothing to fear, we say, as statutes are passed to protect whistleblowers about everything from employee safety to government fraud to banking and corporate malfeasance. Do everything right and you’ll be fine.)

But if you take away our means of demanding truth, when free press goes away, there’s nothing left. We have “the innocent have nothing to fear” in our heads, but no means of ordering those in power to produce the truth.

It’s not infallible and it’s not a guarantee, but barring a major shift in our culture, the robust American defense of the free press is the only defense we’ve got.
