oh dear

Oh, Google Documents. Hello. I knew I knew how to use you, if I just looked. Oh dear.
I'd been composing things idly in the "Drafts" box of Gmail, so I would have them anywhere I went and was bored at a computer. But Google Documents is much better.

Farewell, my ever getting anything work-related done at work... No, it's not that bad, but having such easy access to my WIP means that it's very, very, very hard to avoid the temptation to just nip over and write a couple of lines now and then.

I have no sense of perspective for how much time other people spend dicking around at work. I've never mastered the art of looking busy. Either I'm actually working, or I'm staring dispiritedly at the computer trying to think of something to do, or I'm working furiously on my latest WIP. Bah.
If they fired me, I could earn more in unemployment than I do here. Depressing.

But I actually did get a lot done yesterday-- one of my Sales cohorts got promoted to Sales Manager last week, and has managed not to have a personality transformation, and yet has managed to actually... Manage us. He explained a minor component of the software we use all day every day to me, which has made my job about 60% easier. "Who trained you on this?" he asked, as my face lit up in comprehension.
I thought about it. "[Other girl] showed me the other program, that we don't use, said we never switched to it, and gave me the instruction manual, after explaining that we don't use it, and use this one instead," I said. "So I opened this one and started clicking things."
"Ah," he said. "Well, if it's any consolation, she doesn't really know how to use this one either."
...
Is it any wonder I hear the siren call of my latest WIP sitting in Google Docs?

And in other news, I got all my new wheels onto my skates. There is a saga I think I neglected to tell, over the weekend while I was drowning in Martha Wells, but we'll just say there was Stupid Drama about getting these damn wheels. I did get them, and I now have a skating bag with multiple pockets in it, and so I will never be unprepared for practice again, I would hope. We'll see. Anyhow, I'm excited to try out my new wheels tonight. Bearings that turn. Novelty.

OK, I can't resist.
I just wanted to point out, in recognition of Talk Like A Pirate Day, that my cousin Andreas is the only person I know who has both survived a real-life encounter with actual pirates (when his ship was doing seismic survey work in the African Sea, they had several incidents where pirates took the American employees hostage-- Andreas is an American citizen, but also Norwegian, and uses his Norwegian passport for that job, so he was safe-- the company now employs gunboats) and also has attended the International Pirate Festival in Toronto with me. So, yarr!
Entertainer at Pirate Festival: YARR!
Crowd: YARR!
Drunk Guy: YARR!
Other Drunk Guy: You're always late!
Drunk Guy: That's not what your mother said!
Crowd: YARR!

(that was a recurring schtick throughout the evening-- one of the first entertainers set it up, and had audience members do it, and then throughout the rest of the evening the audience members in question would come out with it again, much to the startlement of some of the later entertainers who hadn't seen the original setup and thought we were somehow doing this spontaneously)
