Chita is in A Mood.
Remi is also in a bit of a mood. But Chita is worse, because she cannot go outside: it is bitter cold and snowy, and we open the door and she stands there cringing in dismay. She blames me.
And Remi.
Crash-thump-thump-thump-scramble skitter.

I have a big goose egg bruise on my right shin. I remember sustaining it, but don't remember the logistics exactly. I can tell, however, by the look of the thing that it came from contact with a still-rolling wheel.

Two girls have broken ankles during the practice of one of the other teams this month. The team blames the slippery floor, but in our practices, the slippery floor just makes us slide out on warmups. Nobody breaks ankles. I'm paranoid anyway, though.

Though I jammed in practice and didn't find it as terrifying as it always is in my head. Perhaps we just weren't being that aggressive. I just was frustrated because I can't see the gaps to head for, or if I can, I can't move my feet fast enough to get through it. But I think it was a good learning experience for the girls playing blockers. So maybe I'll do it some more, but not in bouts. I can clear the pack about once, usually... Oy.

Anyway.

I am In A Mood, intermittently, because It Is That Time. I am bleeding and gross and don't like myself. I'm dealing sort of OK, but could be doing better. Oh well.

Not much else to update really. Just feel like I should.

Hey Bridget, my brother is getting married (ack!) and he wants to create Tolkien's Elvish runes for the following phrase:
Two rings to wed them both
Two rings to guide them
Two rings to bring them both
And in the darkness bind them

Do you have any idea how to do this?

Oh, hm... There are probably a few websites that would have decent info, I can look those up... but the source for their info is going to be from the Appendices to the Return of the King.
I am not even positive whether the inscription on the Ring was in Tengwar, though. I've not researched any of that in quite a while.
I'd taught myself how to write it phonetically in junior high, but that was quite a while ago. (Just read the appendices and copied out the charts.)
But oh, that's another decision he's going to have to make: in what language does he want this written? Phonetic English? The Black Speech? Sindarin? Quenya? I know of people online who could probably translate stuff into/out of the last two, but don't think anyone really knows that first one.
So it's kind of complicated.

Er, p.s., congrats to your brother!

LOL.
Okay, I think he just wants it in pretty runes. But I will ask him...in fact I will call him right now just to hear his reaction. :)

OMG, he actually knew what all those languages were. And so did Brii. Am I the only idiot?
Anyhow, they want Quenya, which they say is the actual Elven tongue. Do you think you can translate it into that? If I'm asking you to do some horribly time-consuming thing, you can totally blow me off. I could research it myself. But you're the only one I know who would probably do it right. :)

The inscription on Frodo's ring wasn't in Quenya.
I don't speak any Quenya at all. It's fiendishly difficult, but not nearly so difficult as Sindarin.
There are all kinds of online generator-y things but I don't know how to use any of them. The script is relatively simple, but the language isn't.
There are a lot more written examples in Sindarin, but Quenya is a lot more regular and has fewer weird ungrammatical errors. Quenya is meant to be sort of like a Latin or Sanskrit kind of Elvish-- no longer spoken except by the most ancient, but the archaic language of lore and poetry. Sindarin is more like Italian or French-- modern, a bit filthy, inconsistent, but still lovely. (And spoken by learned Men.)

I don't know how to translate it, and instead of just modifying the inscription on the ring from the book (or movie), you'd have to start over--since the original inscription was in the Black Speech. (Do you remember Gandalf reading it and Elrond freaking out? That's why.)

So I can't do it myself, but I can help direct you in your attempts. I might know a guy who could do it but I haven't heard from him in a while. (A lot of the LotR fans I knew well have kind of faded away since it's been so long since the movies came out that many of the fanfic sites etc. have gone dormant. I didn't even like the movies that much, but they did get interest up.)

If this is so much trouble, is there a language you would find easier? We don't want black speech, but the geek in us would like to have a translation that might actually mean something close to what Tolkien originally designed the languages for... I don't want to grab a font and just type it out. Seems like a fools action, like writing in Kana without any kanji.
If you still can't help, then thanks anyway!

I don't know. I'll put a post out for the geeks on my f-list-- I have a couple who've studied Sindarin and Quenya, they might have some kind of insight.

You can use kanji without any kana, you're just really limited in what you can say. Like, uh, you can't really conjugate any verbs.

Though the things i find really foolish are like the ones who don't get someone fluent to double-check their work or at least make sure it's right-side up before they get it tattooed on their forehead or whatever... ;)
