My beloved 30-Gb iPod, bought for me by Z in Westchester as the sweetest gift ever, is dead. I brought it in to see the Genius, who hit on me and was sad that he couldn't fix it. I am sorely tempted to buy another. For myself. For my birthday.

I am also sorely tempted to buy myself a laptop, as my iBook won't even boot and Z's old Powerbook has a battery life of like five minutes and also has no Internet.

And yet, there is this teal-green standard-transmission Ford Ranger pickup down the street at Brown's body shop, for sale, for $800. It has damage to the fiberglass body, has the windshield frame Bondo'd to the roof which is inexplicably damaged, and has little spots of rust and several minor windshield cracks, and also, it's teal green. It's a 92.
I am obscenely tempted to simply walk in and pay cash for it.

What should I actually get myself for my birthday?

And oh, we're going to Toronto this weekend-- Friday and Sat. night. What should we not miss in Toronto?

Hrm. I'd say the Royal Ontario Museum or the Bata museum, because I'm a museum nut. The ROM is a gorgeous traditional museum & the Bata is deliciously quirky. The Art Gallery of Ontario is also quite lovely.

Sadly, I'm unaware of nightlife in TO since most of my trips there have been en famille. But Mildred Pierce used to be a great restaurant, and if you like to play pool there's a neat bar called something like the Academy of the Spherical Arts. Both of those are downtown-ish near King St.

If either you or Z have a college ID, which doesn't necessarily have to be valid, you can get a $180 mail-in rebate on any iPod when you buy any Mac. Just, y'know, so you know. You also get 10% off of everything you buy in the store.

Food for thought ;-)

And if you don't have one, you could totally borrow Trevor's, which is not only a college ID but also still valid. :)

Car, laptop or ipod....tough choice. I think I'd vote for laptop on this reasoning: you can live without a car, and the laptop is more useful than music (which can also be produced from the laptop)

The iPod is virtually free with the laptop, however.

...ipods

Funny you should mention ipods - I am looking at them tomorrow with a view to buying one for my upcoming holiday. So as not to have to lug too much around with me. I don't have one at the moment ...

Which therefore makes me a world acclaimed expert on ipods! And so -

I think you should get a new one, and not the car. It's much more useful, easy to carry about, no parking/charge problems, no gas bills, no insurance, you can get it in teal, it's all your own private ipod, not anyone else's, you can take it almost anywhere, unlike the wheels ...

And do you have any tips for a first time ipod buyer?

I had my iPod a long time, and it served me well. I am not familiar with the current generation of iPods, but I did look into them a while ago when another friend was buying one-- My best advice is to really consider how much storage space you're getting for your money, and to understand that you always have more music than you realize, and it is not extravagant to buy larger than your collection, as you will probably fill the space.
That said, don't buy The Biggest One if you don't actually have reason to think you'll need it, because you'll feel a bit silly having paid for double the space you need. But, they are marvellous gizmoes. I have used mine a great deal, and more even than I thought I would.

How about complaining -- why would anybody want to buy an expensive item like that if it's going to die in less than four years?

Do not buy a car without first finding out what mechanical problems it might have. It sounds like it might have some.

Myself, I'd be tempted to buy a new Powerbook battery most of all. If you want to use the laptop mostly to write, lack of internet sounds like an advantage.

Well, I'm useless. Can't advise on Toronto, and even less on iPods.

Now *next* weekend in Toronto is the huge SFX (Science Fiction Exposition) that I volunteer at. The same one that Elijah was at last year and Billy cancelled out of this year. It *will*, however, have Kirk and Spock, which will keep me happy enough.
