so, Evil Dead II is totally worth watching. Watch the "Gore The Merrier" documentary afterward, with particular attention to the end sequence: "Evil Dead... Baby!"
Actually, watch that first. Then the movie's funnier.
Especially with all the footage of the director and the main actor doing Stooges routines in makeup.

But the first Evil Dead movie?
Don't watch that one.
Also, the extras are lame.

II? Totally fast-paced and not at all creepy. Just... freaky. And... funny.

Next up? Well, next time we find someone with a DVD player, we'll watch Army of Darkness. And then...

Yeah, it's tough getting your money's worth out of your Netflix subscription when your goddamn DVD drive is freaking broken.... But we manage somehow.

The second in the series ("Dead by Dawn") is definitely the best. The venerable Brattle Theatre in Cambridge runs it every Hallowe'en, and it always sells out, people come in costume... it's a total hoot.

But the first isn't bad, it's just extremely low budget, so you have to give it a bit of latitude.

I've never managed to sit through Army of Darkness without falling asleep, although I know people who say it's great.

NetFlix... I had to quit my membership. It's not worth the money unless you're watching 5 or 6 DVDs a month, and I wasn't... probably because I don't have a player -- I was using my PC's drive, and when you spend the whole day in front of your puter, you don't relax by sitting in front of your puter. (Although it seems you do).

I'ma have to disagree. There was a point during 'Evil Dead' when someone asked whether it was supposed to be a night of horror or just a really bad babysitting experience. I mean, I understand that they were evil, and dead, and wanted to eat Ash's soul. But mostly they just sat around thumping on things and laughing at him. On the other hand, the tree rape was pretty hot.

Read Bruce Campbell's autobiography If Chins Could Kill. Then all three movies are very much worth watching.

I got to meet Bruce Campbell when he did a book signing a couple years ago. Got my copy autographed, and Morgan and I took our picture with him. He just... rules.

If you love Bruce, you must see Bubba Ho-Tep, in which he (more or less) plays Elvis, who teams up with JFK (sort of), played by Ossie Davis (!) to stop the mummy that's stealing the life force from their fellow nursing home residents.
