So Tumblr has instant messaging now. I thought about posting that I don’t want it, but well, I mean, I hate and fear change, and I get really antsy and worried about notifications like people would want me to reply right away– I am so slow at replying usually, and I have to this day not allowed chat on my Facebook. I’ll Messenger right back and forth with you, but I like to preserve the fiction that I’m getting the messages like emails and replying that way. (Because, often, I am.)

I do not instant message anywhere except Gchat.

But I did grow up on IM (well, my whole young adulthood, also ICQ, nice flashback eh?) and I … maybe… could get used to that sort of thing?

I just, I don’t know. I want replies. I do. If the messaging thing seems lowkey then maybe I could use it.

But I know I generally reply to posts that are by people I don’t know that well, and in many cases, who don’t follow me back– just because the reply doesn’t demand a response. (And in fact, because Tumblr is obnoxious, often doesn’t *allow* a response.) So it is good for little “me too!” notes, or like, for super popular big blogs that express confusion about something I’m super informed on, dropping a tiny bit of knowledge with no expectation of a reply. Or just, little support notes to super famous people.

I would not instant message a super Tumblr-famous person. There are a bunch of people on here that I follow who are super famous fic authors or real authors, or just in general Fancy People, and I will never ever ever feel like I could instant message them.

So, absent replies, I have no way of interacting with them. I can only reblog pearls of their wisdom sometimes.

I guess that’s what this site is after?

There are a few of you I’d feel comfortable messaging, and a number of you who I’d feel sort of honored by getting messages from, and a whole lot of you who I’d feel sort of confused by getting messages from because I am not a person who is cool and I might hide under a blanket and not answer, and then there are undoubtedly some I’d be creeped out or annoyed by getting messages from, because hi there are so many fucking spammers and creepers on this site what the fuck.

But anyway. In short. I don’t know what to think and am sort of confused and also figure it’s probably moot because I, not being Cool, am not likely to get this update at any point in the near future.

But, like. Hi? If you’re a real human and are not trying to have sex with me you would definitely fall within the first three categories of messaging-persons. (1: oh hey, 2: OMG wow, 3: EEP what do I do)

And why, to use a question mark, why does Tumblr do these things to us? Why do they pretend they care about us? We are the product, not the consumer, and I don’t know why they pretend to ask us things?
