Text or Call: listen spoken-out-loud words go right through my head and vanish, so while I’m happy to chat with people, as soon as I hang up, I will have forgotten what was said, so honestly I’d prefer all important communications to be in a text-based format please Last song I listened to: I can’t remember what I last listened to on purpose but yesterday the high school across the street had (we looked it up on their website) their annual Mother/Son Social Event and so they cranked up the sound system from 2pm until 8pm with a bizarre assortment of pop songs (idk would you booty-pop with your mom? if you were a high school Catholic boy?) and the last song of the night that I could identify (I couldn’t hear anything else, it’s louder in my house than in their auditorium I think) was Usher’s Yeah https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxBSyx85Kp8. Fun fact: That was the chart-topper the last time Brood X hatched, 17 years ago. Favorite band/artist/groups: I can never do all-times on these ones, but I was pumped to recently discover that Rhiannon Giddens just put out a new album. My other big hobby for this year is going to be uhh building a tiny house, to live in while at said farm, I just put down a down payment on the roofing supplies so Big Yikes on that. I don’t know how to build a thing but my brother in law swears he does so we’ll see how this goes. (I do believe him. I just don’t believe in the logistics of it. But I’m willing to go along for the ride.)

I sometimes title things meaningfully while working on them but mostly do not, so this might be sort of entertaining. Hmmmm….

I am very matter-of-fact with these and it turns out it doesn’t help, I still never know which doc has which bit I’m working on in it.

I’m supposed to ask other writers to post theirs, but I don’t… know who is actively currently writing stuff and who doesn’t want their AO3 linked to their Tumblr and who would rather not be poked, so I get why the tagging is a requirement and I love when people tag me even if I don’t always do the things, but this is just going to have to be generally If You Would Like To Be Tagged, which is a cop-out but very me.

lazaefair to write the last line I’ve written, and since I saw this while I was writing I’m going to be honest about it and this is actually the last thing I wrote:

It was nice, for once, to talk to someone who wasn’t hostile or suspicious. It had been a good successful season, in that he’d had a good run of lucrative contracts that he’d actually gotten paid for, but he’d also had to deal with a variety of very unpleasant people and sticky situations, and he had some new scars, he’d had to regrow half his teeth, and he badly, badly needed a respite. Having an old woman speak kindly to him wasn’t something he’d have considered a luxury until this moment, when it felt so extravagantly wonderful, like a special present from the universe.

It is, of course, Geralt’s POV, in the sequel thing I’m writing for Little Fishie, and hilariously on-brand, it mentions teeth. I decided to drop in a hint that Jaskier was wrong about Geralt’s toothbrushing obsession in Innermost Depths. This is the bonus of writing out of order…

Farmsister just texted me from Dad’s birthday dinner (he’s 73 today).

The phone rang, and before he picked it up, my venerable father said, out loud, to the room, “Who dis??”

I just found this very old post and thought of something related.

Shortly after the last time but one my nephews visited, my mother said, “They’re always saying there’s a boot in my snake and I don’t know why, is that a meme?” so I explained to her about Toy Story and I wasn’t sure how it had gotten reversed, but that it was a common factor in memes, and the phrase was innocuous enough, from a children’s movie, and so it probably wasn’t anything she had to be concerned with.

So, the last time my nephews visited, sure enough, one of them hollered apropos of nothing there’s a boot in my snake and I said “You! You little jerks! You made me explain memes to my mother! Why are you even quoting Toy Story!” and they both stared at me. “It’s from Toy Story??”

They had no idea. So now I’ve been Googling to try to figure out where they might have gotten it.

The answer seems to be nowhere in particular, just that it’s a backwards-spoonerist Toy Story reference via lord knows what.

Also, children do indeed frequently repeat things they don’t understand, but like. we have the Googs now, it’s not hard to figure out if their Super Secret Code is actually something offensive. (And given the complete lack of subterfuge of most children, I’m sure it was never hard, but now there’s even less excuse.)
