[Tumblr crosspost of me answering an anonymous ask containing the title text]

You know, I would, even now, except. I slowed down on PF when they were like “oh our definition of unacceptable pornography is that we’ll know it when we see it”, which like, literally everyone who’s been on the Internet more than about a damn week is like wow that’s a bad call, and then I stopped altogether when they had some TOS update that kind of crystallized that, but I’d go back and post the spiders story just for old time’s sake. But.

I literally can’t remember my login. Like… blank space in my brain where it should be, staring at the login window like. welp.

I’m taking that as a sign.

Sorry, PF. You were a great idea, and I tried, but then you decided to be weirdly super Anti about Problematic Content (we don’t need hard-and-fast rules, we’ll just rely on torches and pitchforks whenever anyone gets upset! this always works and is never weaponized against the marginalized among us!) and my in-between-X no-generation-name ass is too old and tired for that kind of bullshit. Enjoy y’all’s drama. I genuinely would have leapt in with both feet ten years ago but I have Seen Too Much and Don’t Have The Time anymore.

I am not even being an ass, I am whole-hearted and genuine in this. I know a community is what you make it and listen I have toiled in those mines and I know from bitter experience, it doesn’t fucking matter how hard you work to build a community, if you are not ironclad about best practices for your TOS there will be bad actors who come in and mean-spiritedly co-opt the whole thing and you will have absolutely nothing you can do about it (I mean, hell, they’ll do it anyway, they do it to everything eventually, it’s just that you’ve got to have a TOS that can withstand it, and PF does not), and everything turns to ashes and a whole bunch of people get hurt and if you’re lucky you get to save the decade or so of work you put into it as little isolated files on your computer minus all hyperlinked content and images and minus all the people you loved so much, and if you’re unlucky it’s just all gone and that’s that, thanks Warriors for Innocence or whatfuckingever it is this time.

They’re going to come for you, and I’m sorry, the path you’ve chosen isn’t going to save you.

I am genuinely sorry. But I am also cutting my losses.

I’ve archived everything on Dreamwidth. It’s not sexy and nobody uses it much but it’s also survived and has a solid and transparent TOS that’s withstood bad-faith challenges repeatedly already.

(It wasn’t that long ago I went through my DW friendslist and manually deleted the read permissions of all the LJ friends it auto-imported who went silent ten years ago now, and I literally cried at how many of them I have never found again anywhere else on the Internet. I’m sorry, Maggie, I love you, Julie, I miss you, Hannah, I don’t know if you survived, Meg, I’ll never know what happened to you but you were so important to me for so long, and I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.)

My mom has a periodical column in one of the local newspapers but she archives it all at her Wordpress blog, Schaghticoke History.

She’s quite dry, as a writer, but the content is absolutely there. I don’t remember what I said in the tags on that post that I know has been going around, but that’s sort of the background noise of my life, my mom always making observations like that about the censuses.

Her major projects in the last five years or so have been researching local veterans; she has a book she’s compiled about local men who served in WWI but I don’t know that she’s published that anywhere.

She is not a snappy writer, not with a lot of big conclusions; she likes to just present the results of her primary source readings, and put them out there with some basic conclusions drawn, but she doesn’t do Sexy Polished Sellable-Book Nonfiction stuff. By training she’s a museum curator, and she writes like one.

I have not! I’ll add it to my list of Things What I Should Get To. :)

I’m glad people have been enjoying the Goblin Emperor stuff, I’ve been a little self-conscious that I went radio silent and then suddenly All TGE All The Time. (i have been posting more on Dreamwidth, I’m not really radio silent.) (Farm shit’s gonna start back up this week!)

I haven’t stopped with the Goblin Emperor yet, though. I’m gonna! I’m gonna get myself out of this weird little spiral.

Yesterday I saw two fantastic Twitter threads and one of them was a bunch of professional authors, including the current Hugo nominee Brooke Bolander, admitting that they love to write fanfiction and it helps them recharge their batteries sometimes, and it made me feel better that I’m periodically like this. I’d feel better if I’d actually, you know, ever published an original novel, but. Whatever.

I’m clearly working through a lot of shit, writing this, but it’s a little bewildering sometimes where my brain takes me, y’know?

Beshelar moved so easily with Ino on his hip, it was clear he was used to children, and it struck Cala that he’d never pried much into the man’s background. Once they were clear of the crowd, Edrehasivar did it for him.

“Almost we would think you had your own children, Beshelar,” Himself said.

Beshelar glanced over at him. Ino was completely unconscious, long legs dangling. She was too heavy for the nursemaid to carry thus without struggle, Cala realized, looking at the relative sizes of the two individuals; Ino was not a baby, and probably weighed a good third of what the nursemaid did. “Serenity,” Beshelar said, “we are the eighth of ten children, and our oldest sister married when we were seven and lived in the house with us and her husband, and once her babies were born we had much of the looking-after of them, so if once you are married you decide to dismiss us as your nohecharis, still we could be of service to your household as nursemaid.”

Everyone laughed at that, and Himself said, “We shall have to keep that in mind, Beshelar,” and then because he was a being of pure light, he added warmly, “but we cannot imagine ever wishing to dispense with your services as nohecharis,” and Beshelar glowed a little too.

lady-knight-keladry asked: I just watched Stargate Atlantis for the first time with my sister and I just wanted to let you know just how much your fic made the the whole experience a million times better. It colored the whole experience, and whether you write more or not, you've made this fandom so much more enjoyable for me and my sister, so thank you!

Awwww thanks!!!!

I recently got a jerky comment on one of those old stories along the lines of how dare i leave it incomplete, but at almost the same time, I got a little mini-thread of nice comments too, from a person who was delighted to take them as they were, even unfinished, and another person who saw the first comment and agreed. And it made a ton of difference.

I’m sorry I drifted out of the fandom before I could tie everything up, but I’m glad I made what I did, took what spoke to me and turned it back outward to speak to others. And I’m glad it found you and spoke to you too! That’s the curious thing about fanworks– how they’re about what meanings people bring to those stories, and tease out of them, and not really at all about what the stories’ commercial creators may or may not have intended, or thought through, or had time to explore.

I do not recollect! Alas, you’re not the first to ask! I went to the Sheep and Wool Festival’s website to see if there was a list of what farms were there, but I couldn’t find one, only vendors– and it wasn’t a vendor, it was a farmer, so. Oh, here are the exhibitors– but none of the sheep breeds mentioned are familiar.

I wrote up what breeds I did see at the Sheep and Wool festival here, but I did not remember even at the time which breed it was that the woman was talking about. I know it wasn’t any of the ones I mention specifically in the paragraph toward the bottom of that entry!

Either my mother or sister took the woman’s business card, so I’ll drop them both a line and ask if they still have it. That’s the only lead I’ve got, I’m afraid!

The sheep she was shearing might have been pale brown, but mostly all I have to go on is her description, which did match the sheep in front of her– smallish, not jumpy, sheep-looking sheep. And whatever it was, it was a hybrid cross of something they were trying to establish as its own breed.

For real though, if you’re pondering a solar installation and looking for sheep to graze under it, you might be better off approaching it from “what kind of sheep do people keep around here” because climate may be more of a determining factor. Within that subset, you could also look for smaller breeds, and ask the farmers whether they tend to be jumpers/climbers, or not. (The more wild-type sheep are probably more climby, so like, Jacobs and Icelandics are not gonna be your answer.)
