HELLO BRIDGET AND DAVE!!
I am currently sitting in my powerplant office sweating like crazy (our air conditioner is broken, and has been for four days.) I'm sitting on a little canvas stool instead of my new big, comfy office chair with wheels because it makes me sweat too much. 120+ doesn't do much for me. besides make me hot.
20 AUG Okay, so I misplaced the letter I started and got distracted. Slightly. And now your Birthday is in only 6 days, so I guess this will turn into a Birthday note -- So, Happy Birthday, Bridget! I hope you and Dave enjoy your gift. Slightly impractical, but I thought it was fun. I love the thought of ice cream anyway, since I haven't had it in 6 months. I haven't had a lot of things though and this is just one of them, but I was web-surfing and "ice cream maker" struck me. I figured you could incorporate it into usage for some drink somehow, as well as ice cream.
21 AUG Okay, I'm back again, this time much more awake and coherent. I'm just thinking how funny it is that there was such drama about the NYC power outage-- or the East Coast power outage. I know it is a major city, an not a third world country-- they're supposed to have sophisticated power generation capabilities. So far this morning, our power as gone out 4 times. The generator is having issues, which they're trying to fix, but it's not looking good. Which means computers 'til the batteries run out, no phones, no lights, no printers, and NO AC. Sigh. Well, it gives me an excuse not to do work, which is always nice. And we do have 110v power, so a couple things still do work. The Iraqis were all laughing at the Americans as well-- Bagdhad doesn't have regular power by a long shot, and that's their bargaining chip out where I am-- if you help us keep our power, we won't leave IED's (Improvised Explosive Devices) where your trucks will hit them. Not quite that extreme, but close. It definitely keeps it interesting out here, that's for sure.
So, how was your trip to California? I got your email, and I was so jealous. It sounded absolutely wonderful - and different from anywhere I've been. Adam and I are thinking of going to San Francisco for Thanksgiving. We'll spend the week in October at home in NY, then start school, then a 4-day Thanksgiving weekend in San Francisco, hopefully-- we were thinking about it before I heard from you in San Diego, but that email decided us. Then I go to Louisiana and Mississippi for Christmas and New Year's, to meet Adam's family. I'm glad Mom & dad are somewhat flexible people.
I just got pictures from Mom of the 5th of July party and Terry's wedding. I can look at those pictures over and over - the first thing that strikes me is the color- greens, qhites, blues- because they're so vibrant compared to ANYTHING out here (except the flares that go off every night) and then noting the people, seeing howe everyone's changed, imging being able to be there... Sigh. I love pictures.
[Adam said he emailed you about a digital camera, (speaking of pictures) - I told him you'd probably be a good expert.]
Anyway, it looks like the wedding was fun - also from what you and Mom wrote, it sounded that way. I'm sorry I had to miss it. Especially the pars about hanging out with everyone, talking, drinking daquiris... Ah, well. There will be other ocasions. Hopefully I'll be able to pop up every once-in-a-while while I'm at the advanced course - it doesn't sound too strenuous.
So, nothing exciting happening here. I'm ready to kill my boss every time he talks to me, so it's about time for me to head on out, and gracefully let someone else have my job. Definitely not sad at all.
Both of you take care, and enjoy the remaining summer. Happy Birthday late, Bridget - hope you had a good one! I miss you all!!
Love,
Katy
