The Microsoft Office Assistant.
Jun. 29th, 2003 10:09 amWhen I reinstalled Windows, he was set to 'on' again by default.
My reflex since I first got my first Win 95 machine has always been "gaah! Turn that thing off!"
But, mellowed as I am by nearly a decade now of Windows use, I let him live, this time. I was bemused. What is this little dancing, annoying thing on my desktop and what's it doing?
Dave had confessed to me that on the rare occasions he used Microsoft Word, he often found the paperclip helpful. So I thought, what the hell, I'll give it a shot.
I've been amused no end by it at this point. I found that if you right-clicked on him, you could click 'animate!" and it would randomly choose one of his animations to play.
On Microsoft's website, there's a page on Clippit (known as Clippy) that's sort of funny but a little heavy-handed. See, in Office XP, they incorporated his hints directly into the menus, thereby eliminating the need for the paperclip altogether. So they made a series of movies about it, and a game, with the voice of the paperclip provided by Gilbert Gottfried.
Obnoxious. Amusing. Kind of like the paperclip itself! crazy.

Date: 2003-06-29 09:58 am (UTC)Ah well. I do remind myself now and then that I don't have to mop floors, take abuse from drunks, balance the cash register, or sell beer to drunks. And I get my nights and weekends off.
So, it sucks, but it could be worse.

Date: 2003-06-29 11:35 am (UTC)Well, I get to leave in 90 minutes so I'm feeling a bit better about this whole weekend-working thing now. It's an awesoem job the rest of the week. And as soon as four people die or otherwise must be replaced, my job will be much better...the average time on weekends is 1 year...so I'm almost halfway there.
