Because now my WinBox won't even boot. And, I can't speak-- my voice is totally gone! Yay!

Last night when my boxen wouldn't find me, I had it booted up anyway into the Windows default screen where it didn't know who i was. I found my username's desktop, and I verified that, in fact, all my files were there. Hm. So I rebooted yet again in a forlorn hope that this time it would find me, but had resolved to follow Dave's advice and just set myself up again and try to reinstate all my files somehow. Except it failed to boot.

It went through the DOS bootup thing, and it got to the Starting Windows dotted bar across the screen, and it was about four or five ticks filled-in solid when it just hung, and sat there.
After a short while, it told me the following distressing information:

Windows 2000 could not boot ... (hang on, I'm going to go try it again so I get the error message exactly right):

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows 2000
Setup using the original Setup floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

So............
I found my Win2K installation disk, against all odds. I actually found it. I put it in the CD-ROM. I pressed 'del' at the first boot thingy where it says you can, and I changed my BIOS so that the first boot was from the cd-rom.
During boot, it says "searching for boot record from CDROM... none found. Searching for boot record from floppy... none found." (Floppy is the second choice by default and i left it that way. I don't have a Win2K boot disk anyway.) "Searching for boot record from IDE-0... OK." And it does the same thing it always does.

So what do y'all think? Is this a sign? Should I upgrade my system, reinstall Windows on one partition, and start learning Linux? Should I sell this and buy a Mac? Should I just kill myself?
