a conversation with my friend kat from high school, about her wanting to marry her live-in long-term boyfriend.
I've left her typos intact, as I believe they add much-needed color to this drab journal.

me (9:09:31 PM): well, it's not like being married'd be all that much different from what you have now, except for being all official and government-sanctioned and all.
Kat (9:09:43 PM): true
Kat (9:09:45 PM): very true
Kat (9:09:50 PM): that's why it's kind of pointless
Kat (9:09:52 PM): sigh
me (9:09:53 PM): yeah.
me (9:09:58 PM): But then you could say "husband".
Kat (9:10:00 PM): esp since neither of us go in for the whole god thing
Kat (9:10:05 PM): yeah, that'd be very cool
Kat (9:10:07 PM): i like that word
Kat (9:10:14 PM): and "wife"
me (9:10:19 PM): Over the last 6 months or so I've been revising my thoughts and thinking I might after all like to get married some day.
me (9:10:24 PM): Though not with a big ceremony
me (9:10:29 PM): and certainly not a church ceremony
Kat (9:10:42 PM): agreed! :-)
Kat (9:10:54 PM): Trevor wants a ceremony next to a large cliff...
me (9:10:57 PM): It just makes things easier to explain; 'boyfriend' can mean any number of huge things, but 'husband' still does mean something...
me (9:11:07 PM): why, so he could jump off if he changed his mind?
Kat (9:11:08 PM): so he can 'accidentally' push his family off when they get drunk and try to argue with eahc other
me (9:11:10 PM): j/k
Kat (9:11:14 PM): :-)
me (9:11:14 PM): ah. that's even better
Kat (9:11:17 PM): you were clsoe
me (9:11:29 PM): I was. Wacky.
me (9:11:42 PM): Try Thatcher Park; it's close enough that his alcoholic family could make it there.
Kat (9:11:46 PM): laugh
Kat (9:11:50 PM): they live in texas and ohio now
Kat (9:12:02 PM): so its unloikely theyd attend any wedding
Kat (9:12:10 PM): but you never know...
Kat (9:12:15 PM): they might just fly in or something
me (9:12:20 PM): Oh.
Kat (9:14:22 PM): so what kind of ceremoyn do you want?
me (9:14:51 PM): I dunno.
me (9:15:01 PM): BBQ in the backyard.
me (9:15:03 PM): casual.
Kat (9:15:07 PM): hmm
me (9:15:24 PM): Nice dress for me, decent pair of shorts and polo shirt for him, straw hat, bean dip, maybe some fried chicken.
Kat (9:15:28 PM): hee hee
Kat (9:15:43 PM): i dunno tho...i'd want it to be different enoguh that i wouldn't associate it with similar parties
me (9:16:43 PM): true, true.
me (9:16:45 PM): ah well.
Kat (9:17:37 PM): the part im having difficulty with is the party afterwards--ceremony thing
Kat (9:17:58 PM): id like to have many people at the party, but as few as possible at the ceremony
me (9:18:25 PM): Ah. Yes, I see.
me (9:18:29 PM): Ceremony, reception.
Kat (9:18:34 PM): yeah
Kat (9:18:44 PM): i think the best ceremoyn is about ten seconds long...
Kat (9:18:52 PM): would be kind of pointless to assmeble everyone for that
Kat (9:19:03 PM): but the whole point is to say your promises in front of everyone you know...
Kat (9:19:25 PM): but i dont like the readings and stuff at the ceremony...id rather have some sort of open mike thing at the reception
me (9:19:33 PM): So, yeah.
me (9:19:37 PM): That's what I was thinking.
me (9:19:46 PM): Say, OK, Is everybody here? OK, we're getting married now.
Kat (9:19:47 PM): cool
Kat (9:19:53 PM): :-)
me (9:19:55 PM): Everybody look this way and shut up.
Kat (9:20:01 PM): laugh
me (9:20:06 PM): Do you? "Yes." Do you? "Sure." OK, you're married.

Yeah. That'd be great.

Am online pursuing a job tip from Kat (I could work for her company and earn even less than she does!!! She assures me that she lives quite well on her $1400/mo. pay ($1100 after taxes). She even has extra money left over. And her boyfriend can afford to pay for half of everything, no real trouble, though it's going to be a stretch when he goes back to college now. He's officially below the poverty line, as a full-time assistant manager at a store in the mall. She's not officially below poverty, but qualifies for section 8 housing.
She's negotiating a raise tomorrow and also applying to work for one of the local daily newspapers, instead of the weekly she works for now.
In short, I'd make even less than her. Wow! Awesome!

Also online talking Dave through checking all the fluids in his car. I'm having trouble with the brake fluid; I know what it looks like on my car, and he's located it on his, but he can't open it to look and can't see through the windows. Dude, mine doesn't have windows, so i haven't a clue what he's talking about. Also, transmission fluid. How to check that???
Also, doing laundry.
And today I baked a single batch each of four different kinds of cookies. In order-- Peanut butter cookies, which I'd never baked, Molasses Crinkles, which I had to refrigerate the dough for while I made the next two kinds, Chocolate Chip except with M&M's instead, and Cape Cod Oatmeal, which have raisins in them.
Have boxed up 2/3 of them all in two tins, one for me (to bring to Dave) and one for Fiona to bring back to Elmira after her weekend home.
I'll probably eat most of the ones I bring to Dave. Oh well. I also cleaned out my clothes in the garage, and packed a laundry basket full of the ones i want to bring to JC. Including my track pants. And sports bra. Maybe I'll exercise.
Maybe not.
Hung out with Dad most of the day, and we went to my storage locker and loaded my car up with some furniture to bring to Dave's, since it'd do more good there. Also did car stuff, wandered around. Between that and the cooking I spent all day on my feet and they're astonishingly sore-- my legs too. Gosh I'm out of shape.
Anyhow, must prepare for Journey To Zobar's... Woo!

Especially given that you work rather more than 40 hrs a week. Being as you belong to them.

But, no food and housing means you don't really have to spend any of it. Lots of young people, while serving, concentrate on saving up their money, so they can get a head start on life when they're done.
But, if you're in a cool place, like katy is, you should spend your money on seeing it. Or so she feels. So she's pretty poor, and will have to get a decent-paying job when she gets out.
But either way, not having to pay for food our housing is a great deal.
Yes, you're silly for giving up $30K/yr, but not that silly.
