when you want to comment on your fave smutfics but you don’t know how to not make it weird

Just do it, do it, embrace the weird, fondle the weird, make the weird your wife. (That got weird.)

Basically tho, people usually don’t comment on smut, and it’s nice of you to actually do it. Plus, practically speaking, if an author knows that a certain thing is getting a response, odds are good they’d continue it and then who benefits? YOU, MAN. YOU.

I laugh at how smutty stories have more anon kudos than other stories. “I’ll give you a nod, but not my name!”

The first time someone left a comment on a smut thing I wrote to say “this got me hot!” I was like uhh… … for about three seconds, and then I was like, well, that was the point, wasn’t it? And since then, occasionally people will express appreciation a little more frankly than I expect, but– I mean, as long as the comment is about the thing I wrote, and not me, it’s not weird? because that’s what I set out to do? i mean, it’s smut, right? and if you’re in your bunk then it is probably resonating with you, right? so I don’t need like, explicit reactions, but it’s certainly not weird to be told that a thing I wrote hoping it would be hot actually did its job?
So there’s my two cents, as an occasional and unabashed smut peddler.

That made me think of once when I got a little too explicit of a reaction to a bit of pretty unnecessary and gratuitous Maedhros/Fingon smut–the story had plenty already and more was kind of less rather than more, but I had a spent a lot of time crafting it so I left it in…. That was kind of hilarious.

I definitely remember you as one of the early Tolkien smut writers that I admired when I was a new fanfic writer–seem to remember some Lothiriel/Eowyn femslash that was very good. At least I think it was you. It may not have even been as explicit as I remember, but it made a big impression–there was a lot of het and slash at the time and less femslash. Which brings me to another point; sometimes when I encounter a second time around what I remember as excellent smut, often it is less explicit than the impression it left–which is another instance of doing the job well. Not that there is anything wrong with really explicit.

Oh yes, Lothiriel/Eowyn— that was me. I only did it the one time. We were both writing Eomer/Lothiriel, weren’t we? Wasn’t that when we met? Oh my gosh. Yes. I’m writing a story now that’s set in the early 2000s as a period piece, isn’t that funny? Like, it’s ancient history for some of the people reading it. Back before phones had cameras in them! And the one character goes to the library to check her email! I have had to actually research to try to remember what would have actually been reasonable for a person to do way back in those olden days. LOL.

And yes— a lot of smut, I remember as more explicit than it was too! You remember how something made you feel, really, not what it actually said.
