early morning!

dragonlady7went to bed at 2. woke up at 6:30. Darius' alarm went off 6:40.

I don't think his alarm went off before...
I was dreaming that there was a war, I think. I was me, with my family, and we were basically fortifying our house against possible invaders. I remember at one point I found a little American hand-flag lying on a windowsill and idly picked it up as I went to put iron bars over the insides of the windows. And there was something about irresponsibly powerful people destroying the world for science, or with science; there was a brief section with penguins, and they had moved some things to the South Pole to study them easier, and this struck me and whoever I was with as wrong.
All in all, an odd night. And I woke up with my father declaring our preparedness from a strange tower atop our barn, and vaguely had a hint of myself shooting someone with a shotgun as they tried to break into the house-- like, I pointed it at them and said "Get out of here," and they looked at it and looked at me and continued what they were doing, so I shot them, at close range, with large pellets. [Shudder] But if they'd broken in they would have endangered my family...
Actually it was in response to September 11th that Dad got out the shotgun and taught us to use it. It's a dangerous world, he said, and if the President told us to be prepared for anything, I'm going to be. He'd been teaching us on the .22 rifle since we were probably... ten to twelve, and occasionally on the .9mm pistol as we were older, but this autumn he got out the shotgun and the .45 as well, and taught us all about the use of the shotgun as a defensive weapon and as a hunting weapon. (The pistol, we learned to use as a defensive weapon. I wouldn't know how to drop a deer with it, though I think the general advice to shoot for center mass would probably work as well. Those things'll keep going if you take out their leg.)
And I have to say, while the actual prospect of using one terrifies and disgusts me, it reassures me that I know how. It made the dream not such a nightmare, which it was turning out to be; i think I must have tried deliberately to influence the outcome of what must've been a terrifying nightmare of helplessness at one point, by focusing on my dad being in command and my family being prepared. If we were actually under attack of course we wouldn't come out too well, but the thought that we could put up enough of a fight to deter anyone who wasn't well-prepared and determined was how I ended the dream, which isn't so bad.
But dammit. Now I'm awake, and can't get back to sleep. As I lay here with the dream dissipating, I started thinking of how I could form the structure of my homepage in tables, and was trying to figure out the colspan attribute in my head in order to graphically represent a wall, a window, and a series of rooms, so I could make a graphic but infinitely expandible "hallway" page...
oof. And then I came up with a way to cut a stencil of a dancing panda. Which i've forgotten now...
Guess I'm not meant to sleep just now. That's ok I can nap later, since I don't have anything today.

Date: 2002-03-02 09:13 pm (UTC)The principle is the same. Aim for center mass; the pistol is large-guage enough that if you hit them at all, anywhere in the body, you'll knock them down. And so you're more likely to stop them than if you try for the head, because you're more likely to miss the head.
