When I was 18 I did an exchange student thing and went to the UK for a year, and like, divided by a common language and all (my mother frequently photocopied pages out of Webster’s to send me so I could prove I wasn’t just *wrong*)– the one that really got people was when I pointed out at the ocean and pronounced that word.
“Buoy”.
In my dialect, that’s got two syllables.
In their dialect, it’s phonetically identical to “boy”.
We had a lot of arguments. And like, yes, buoyant is pronounced “boy-ant” and “boo-ey” is objectively hilarious.
But my point. In my dialect, this post doesn’t make sense.
Also it was a running joke around school for the whole year where my Stupid American Trick was to yell “BOOEY”.
