i guess i’m just brainstorming here but I would love to make a sort of… resources-style website… blog I guess… about, more or less, homesteading/prepping, only one that’s explicitly Not About Covert Racism Or Other Right-Wing Bullshit, because jesus christ every Google search, every Pinterest board, every time I look something up, eventually you wind up with Frugal-living Quiverfull Zombies-Actually-Means-Black-People Jesus Hates Fags kind of shit, no matter what, no matter how goddamn innocuous your search.
I mean, fucking, refrigerator pickles, and you’re suddenly on I Obey My Husband In Every Thing Dot Jesus Dot Biz reading about how cutting your hair is a sin. Like. What the fuck.
I’ve always idly wanted to have my own website and put my own ads on it because I do wind up with a lot of readers, whatever journaling site I wind up using. And I’ve always wanted to have a kind of theme, and always get distracted.
But I feel like trying to organize something like that wouldn’t be beyond me. And if i were smart, I’d take contributions and make there be like, community resources stuff. My main focus would be on the fact that This Site Is Not Secretly About Jesus OR Racism And You Are Safe Here And I Promise I Am A Weirdo But Not The Gross Kind. AKA, why should hateful freaks have all the post-apocalyptic fun???
Sections I’d want to include would be:
*DIY tutorials and stuff, things you can do, both from a frugal living / prepper kind of perspective and also from an intrinsic-satisfaction-of-doing-it-yourself standpoint– and this would range from food recipes to super basic construction tutorials to frugal living tips to whatever else. (I’m going to do a super mega-tutorial one of these days on how to process your own chickens, for example. I’ve been working on this for a long time.)
* consumer awareness stuff: maybe it’s because the family farm is pursuing organic certification and I just read a whole article about egg labeling again, but it’d be great to have a tab that was all the articles and resources I could compile about understanding what commercial products you *are* buying, and how to more actively make conscientious choices about that kind of thing
* political resources and stuff– overviews of government policies that are helpful/harmful– like, protecting consumers vs. rewarding bad business, or like, zoning and farm law kind of stuff letting you or not letting you do things yourself, and then bigger-picture stuff like climate change and so on
* guns. I feel like this may fold into the above tab, but maybe not. A ton of left-leaning people are in favor of reform of our gun laws, but my take on this is that we won’t get this, not in any meaningful way, not anytime soon, so maybe I’ll keep this tab separated out so that if you’re Really Not Into This, you can avoid it. But I want to write about gun laws, what the laws we have actually *are*, what your rights are as a gun owner, what your rights are as someone who does not want to get shot, etcetera. I think, at least on the grounds that the lunatics have them so I may as well, that i may pursue getting a pistol permit in my state, and i want to document that process and also clearly and concisely explain the laws and best practices that *do* exist. Simply because, again, if you Google this, it takes you about one click to wind up on the website of some wacko who wants to kill n*ggers. Like, I’m not even exaggerating. This is SO UNFRIENDLY to research if you are not actually a hideous person. But I personally know a lot of people who have guns, and many of them are a bit fed up with how gross that scene is too, and so I want to help make this information more accessible. For those who live rurally, and especially those who hunt, guns are an indispensable tool, a part of life, and something that’s around all the time, but they’re poorly-understood even there, and I’ve seen more carelessly-handled firearms in my life than I care to think about.
