So I followed this recipe and made papier-mache clay. I have it in an airtight container and have lost steam.

I really want to make little birds and butterflies and fairies and things, to put into dried flower arrangements and on wreaths. It would be a great combination of things I’m good at and obsessed with, and wouldn’t require too much of me in terms of things I’m terrible at. They would probably wind up too fussy to make any money selling (if I paid myself for labor), but maybe I’d get get good at them. I don’t know. (If I mass-produced very small ones that weren’t all that detailed, they could wind up cheap enough in terms of time spent that it wouldn’t be ridiculous to stick them into the dried arrangements. And the materials are basically free, so.) But I want to decorate them with real chicken feathers and dried flowers and scraps of fabric, and paint them so they look cool, and do all kinds of neato creative things with them. I have so many ideas.

But I’m sort of paralyzed because it takes a lot of function to teach yourself a new skill like that, you know? I’ve never made papier-mache before, certainly not modeled from clay. I may have covered a balloon in strips once in Girl Scouts or something, circa 1987, but I don’t remember, I may just have watched it done.

I’ve absolutely made little cut-out things of similar complexity. I’m sure I can do it. I just have zero faith and nobody to egg me on, so I’m not doing it.

Wah. *flops over* I suck!

(I also have a running joke with a friend about making my skull into a cup so I’d love to make him a papier-mache life-size half-skull with a plastic insert that would actually hold liquid, and send it to him out of the blue apropos of nothing, but that would require kind of a lot of planning I think. Meanwhile there was also a running joke about decorating the yurt with the skulls of the cat’s prey animals, and it would be funny to me to make a miniature wall-of-skulls-on-pikes from papier-mache as well.)

I need to be sort of gentle with myself about this but i also need to get a fucking grip and finish something one of these days. The clay won’t last forever so if I don’t want this to have been a waste I need to fucking do it, you know?
