Hmm, protip: if you’re feeling sort of down on yourself and everything, don’t go looking for old creative writing projects and reread them all and get sucked in and then hit the part where you stopped writing and they dissolve into nonsense at like, warp speed, because that’s a downer.

I was like oh hmm I got up to some good shit in the years between 2004 and 2012, when I wasn’t writing fanfic. Yeah, sure, I did, but I didn’t fucking finish any of it.

It came down to a split-second’s decision: run, or cast the spear? Ruku could see as the mammoth came towards her, shaking its head, that she would never be able to land a killing blow– to kill the animal, you needed to brace the other end of the spear against the ground and let it impale itself. The great tusks swept back and forth as the animal charged, and she knew that even if she herself were lucky enough to dodge, the spear would be knocked aside. She could either abandon the attempt, or throw the heavy, unwieldy spear instead. It was not a throwing spear; several throwing spears dangled uselessly from the animal’s great shoulders. But she did not have the angle, here.

Throw and run, she decided; behind her was another line of spearmen, and if she distracted it, it would be more likely to be trapped by her comrades. She hefted the spear, but it was not balanced. She had to spend a crucial moment adjusting it, and in that moment, the animal swerved and lunged, and was upon her.

She had time to take a perfect shot at it with the spear, her strong and obedient right arm plunging the stone blade deep into the animal’s fleshy neck, and then the tusks caught her, smashing down and across, and tossing her out of the way like so much dry grass.

Mm-hmm, there’s like 40,000 words of that but it doesn’t go anywhere and ends abruptly. There was time-travel and sorcery and a bunch of porn. Mostly I got to indulge myself describing mammoth-bone huts from the inside, that’s what’s memorable. Oh well! That was circa 2006, I believe. Maybe 2007. Scrivener doesn’t keep good data on revision dates, that I can find.
