I guess I should consider myself lucky that this is the most annoying thing I’ve seen on Facebook this week, but– well, there’s been political bullshit but I’m pretty adept at just scrolling past, so– on one of my Instagram crossposts of the yurt interior, someone I know sort of vaguely (he was a husband of a fellow skater some years ago and hung out with us a bit) commented to me that “it must be nice to live so free” – wtf man, do you think I’m just camping all summer for fun? or what I don’t know, because it’s mid-November, I’m clearly not camping and it’s clearly not summer. (It was a photo of the kerosene heater and the quilted insulation, which I suppose is cool or interesting or whatever but also I’m clearly in a dwelling that’s not a proper building and it’s cold as balls out? I’m not saying it’s not fun, but whose definition of a lark would that strictly be??)
I wrote back that I don’t know that I’d define it as “free” per se, but if you take a 50% income cut and pare your living expenses down to the bare minimum, then you too could probably live in a canvas shack with no electricity in the backyard while you help a family member start a business; it’s an attainable dream, given the right circumstances.
I wouldn’t call it “free”, but I guess it’s not particularly expensive either?
I don’t imagine he was intending to be condescending or mean or whatever but I don’t really know what he was intending, I just know it sort of rubbed me wrong.
