“I’ve never been good at short,” the writer said ruefully, sitting atop her multi-part epic articulating significant worldbuilding and complex personal dynamics. “Yes, I can see why that would be a problem,” the other writer said, trying to surreptitiously kick the stack of half-empty notebooks behind her.
LOL my half-empty notebooks are just a whole lot thicker. I AM going to finish one of the fucking epics one of these goddamn days, I promise. I picked out a whole like 100 words on chapter 9 of part 5 today, I swear I did, instead of writing side tangents about a new thing (ok I did that too).
I’m sure the grass is greener on the other side of the fence but I’m also realizing I’m going to have to make a deliberate policy of writing shorter things, and it’s going to take a lot of hard work and discipline, so. Economy of words is so crucial and difficult to achieve. Writing perfect standalone perfect little things like that doesn’t just happen. You don’t just shake your brain and have those fall out without a damn lot of work and practice first.
I’ve just been devoting all my work and practice to ever-longer things, and it would behoove me to be more versatile.
