also, I hung out with my kid cousins the other day, and honestly my favorite part of hanging out with small children is is that I get to be EXCITED and INTERESTED and ENCOURAGING about everything
like, one of them is eleven and he likes circuits and so I get to be like CIRCUITS ARE THE COOLEST THINGS SCIENCE IS SO FUN, but my other cousin she likes crafts and sports and I get to be like I LOVE YOUR FUNKY COLORS AND THAT WAS A REALLY GOOD VOLLEYBALL SERVE
(third cousin is tiny and so we painted our nails purple for princesses, because she loves princesses)
I’m not their mother, or even their aunt, I’m their cousin, and it’s so refreshing not to have to put on the calm, deferential mask like—yeah, everything you think is cool really is cool, it’s so cool and you’re doing so good at it!!!
kids are so nice.
i’m at this point with my nieces/nephews and it’s lovely but exhausting, because i also am too old to sustain the excitement. It’s great that you want to recite this book from memory twelve times running but I am super old, I’ve been working all day, and I have to get supper on the table. I wish I’d had little cousins, because fifteen years ago I’d’ve been all over re-enacting this whole movie with action figures, but I am So Tired and I don’t know this recipe so I have to focus and read it through, I only have forty minutes and the chopping alone is going to take me– Christ Almighty NO do not climb out the window wait ASK ME FIRST fucking hell kid what are you doing?
