you have basically just described why i haven’t been the doctor at all in the last five or so years! i’ve had a lot of bad experiences with doctors + i hate making phone calls! like, i don’t currently have a doctor and the effort that it would take me to find one is just not worth it. especially when i know there’s good odds that any doctor i see would just mistreat me.

Yes!

My favorite one was when I had an overexercise-induced injury and the doctor refused to touch me, sent me for x-rays (which don’t show soft tissue), said there’s nothing wrong with you, and said you’re dangerously obese and must lose weight immediately, and when I said, the whole appointment I’ve been talking about how upset I am that this actual real pain I’m experiencing makes it difficult for me to play the sport I practice for like twenty hours a week and work my physically-demanding job– there’s literally not any more time in a week for me to spend exercising than I already do, and few exercises that wouldn’t strain the affected joints further, so how am I to lose weight?

“Cut carbs,” she said, and that was the end of the appointment.

(A sports medicine resident who was at one of the games I was playing noticed my tendency toward pronation, and figured out that I had resulting patellar tendonitis and gave me shoe inserts that fixed the problem instantly. I was five foot seven, twenty-six years old, and 175 pounds at the time.)

This practice mostly treated me well! Mostly they were like, your numbers are so good, your weight’s not an issue. The NP hadn’t brought it up because I came in when the depression issues were acute and she was (correctly!) addressing that, and it was only at my last appointment that she said “and oh, your weight, we should really address that, but we’ll save it until we’ve got this handled.”

I never came for the follow-up, and haven’t been back to any kind of doctor.

what were the inserts? are there ones for supinators? I supinate like WHOA

He cut pieces of foam into the right shape and stuck them in my shoes.

I went to Fleet Feet and bought some $40 shoe inserts that did about the same thing, and haven’t had problems in about 7 years.
