I feel like maybe I’m to the point of banging pots and pans together about the fact that sometimes I think the use of the word “mook” in Steve and Bucky fanfics has singlehandedly driven me away from the MCU.
It took me less than ten seconds of Googling to determine that “mook” is a seventies term, way back when I first considered using it, and so I didn’t. It wasn’t particularly difficult and I didn’t think that it was that big a deal.
But it turns out that I am literally the only person on the entire Internet who did that.
It’s a hallmark of otherwise-painstakingly-researched, brilliant and heartbreaking fanfics that Steve or Bucky will call the other a “mook” at some point and it is like having a broom handle shoved through the spokes of a fast-moving bicycle every fucking time.
Why can I not just resign myself to it?????? But it’s everywhere!!! It haunts my dreams.
Stop! Using! Seventies! Slang! In! Your! Forties! Stories! New York has CHANGED over the decades! There are different words for things! New York has not always been dominated by Italian mobsters!
Whyyyy does this bug me so much?
Probably because it’s. It’s like. Every story. Every story. (and yes I’m flipping out because I was like 2k words into a pretty cool story and then finally the long-anticipated first dialogue from the Winter Soldier is him calling Steve a– you know what he called him, I don’t have to type the fucking word again.)
