I was making gifs for other purposes and I realized something about Finn.

Now he’s the classic inexperienced and not very good liar, and he does a very classic thing that inexperienced liars do when they lie, he looks away from the person he’s talking to.

At the end of the movie he’s become a bit better at it, but even as he semi-lies to Han (I think Finn already have some idea what to do about the shields, even if he can’t actually do it himself) he keeps looking away.

Here when he tells Rey he’s with the Resistance:

He looks away from her as he speaks and only looks back when he’s done.

Okay, now let’s skip back to the conversation he has with Poe when he springs him from his cell, the part where he agrees with Poe that he’s doing this because he needs a pilot:

He’s looking away again.

Because when Finn tells the truth, especially a truth he has a hard time getting out he behaves very differently.

Here just before confessing to Rey that he’s a Stormtrooper.

He looks straight at person he’s talking to, though he needs a moment to sort compose himself.

So how does he look when he tells Poe that he’s doing this because it’s the right thing?

He’s looking straight at him composing himself (he has that same blink that he has before fessing up to Rey) and when he speaks he’s looking straight at him.

So why does Finn lie to Poe by agreeing that he just needs a pilot?

Well for one he’s desperate. He wants to get away from the First Order and it has to be now, he also wants to take Poe with him. So I think it wouldn’t have mattered what Poe suggested as an alternative Finn would have gone with it. Besides his plan does indeed call for a pilot. But it’s still not his main motive, so to Finn it feels like a lie.

For another, Finn is still very uncertain about his own identity. All he knows this early in the movie is that he’s a Stormtrooper, but that he doesn’t want to be one and that means getting as far away from the First Order as he can.

It’s the same with Rey. She is the one who asks him if he’s with the Resistance and Finn simply goes with it. Yes he wants in part to impress her, but he also still don’t know who he is. He haven’t had a chance to start figuring it out yet.

Over the course of the movie he does so. After his

“I’m a Stormtrooper”  confession to Rey he starts doing an about slowly but surely. He goes from  “I need a pilot”/”I’m with the Resistance” (i.e. letting others define his identity and motives) to “I’m in charge”/”I’m only here for Rey” (I am who I decide to be, not what other define me as, and I set my own goals).

But that’s a long and convoluted path, that I’ll address in another post.
