Lovely, thanks! I have no strident concerns about canon in this fandom either, which is a switch for me; I’m happy enough to see people do other cool things with the characters. (Although, side note: it’s canon that Poe left Black One with Kes? I missed this somewhere!) I don’t pretend to be completely up on all things TFA-fic, but I would agree that the fraught Kes/Poe dynamic had not been done very much before you. I would further submit that no one has done it better.

I don’t know what it is– there are some fandoms where I just can’t abide a lack of regard for canon, and others where only some aspects bother me, but in this one, I just give almost no fucks. Like, as long as the characters are recognizable in some way, I’m on board. I don’t know if that’s specifically a feature of the fandom (though I feel like it is! maybe because canon recently said “fuck it” to the entire extended universe and picked-and-chose what to keep? I feel like that set a precedent for the fans) or if it’s me just being a little burned-out on fandom in general and wanting to get back to original stuff? (I do, I really do, I have a couple of really great ideas that are burning me I tell you what, but nobody’ll read them and I need Validation so they’re back-burner burning me y’know?) But ANYWAY.

It is canon, I guess in Before The Awakening, that Poe left Black One on Yavin 4 and it mentions Kes and the Ranch. there was a great post about it that I reblogged not all that long ago, somewhere within the noise-signal nonsense of Tumblr.

I haven’t seen all that many fics with Kes and Poe’s fraught dynamic but I’ve seen complaints about it. I tend to have a pretty highly-curated experience in fandom, so that’s pretty common– I miss out on some good stuff, but I also tend to miss most of the upsetting shit, so I’ll kind of take it. The downside though is that I sometimes am not aware when something’s Overdone.

It can’t just be that my ficlet colored people’s fanon, because I am not nearly as important as I think (and actually this is kind of freeing; I was super anxious about getting accused of fascist apologia for having the First Order peeps not be Soundly Condemned in my fic until I realized that the Light Side Cool Kids I admire so much but who are so wholeheartedly invested in FO=Nazis= May Not Be Discussed don’t read my shit anyway so the likelihood of anyone getting mad at me is vanishingly small. That, kids, is the benefit of relative obscurity).

Anyway. Thank you! I have tried very hard to give them a dynamic that is both narratively interesting and somewhat plausibly-realistic as being a way that humans would interact in complicated situations. I am so so so overinvested in the Dameron family.

But I do wish I’d started from a less oppositional place with them; it could still be fraught without having been so dramatic about it. Just like Old Married Sex, I feel like Fundamentally Healthy Family Dynamics aren’t the starting point for enough fiction.

But we can’t always be the change we want to see in the world. You can’t write every fic, just like you can’t pet every cat.
