I even save sentence fragments in my outtake file. That way, when I inevitably change my mind about something, I never have to mourn how I erased the PERFECT SOLUTION TO ALL MY PROBLEMS I DON’T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS EXACTLY BUT IT WAS PERFECT. Also, having moved it rather than deleting it, I’ll sometimes look at it and decide it wasn’t as amazing as I’d thought after all. It saves me a lot of time and self-recrimination.

I should probably start doing this, the more I think about it. Especially lately, since I seem to have had an uptick in doubting that anything I’m writing is any good. Worst case scenario, I can compare what I threw out to what I kept and see that what I kept is good by comparison, hopefully.

It definitely helps me to have the earlier version around rather than having to rely on my brain’s version of events. Plus, if I’m stuck or looking for inspiration, sometimes I’ll stroll through my outtake file and find something really good in there and rescue it, and it’s a wonderful feeling, because not only was I smart enough to write this excellent bit of prose, I was smart enough to save it.
