ahh I’ve been in that situation once re: coffee, or at least, my family has. The first time my uncle visited us (instead of us visiting him) my parents literally went out and bought a coffee maker just for him.

Dude’s mom loaned us a spare old two-cup model she’d had from an RV trip or something, and we used that for years and gradually got hooked on coffee ourselves. Then one of my sisters moved in with us for a couple of months and she bought a decent 12-cup coffeemaker, so we’ve used that ever since, and under its influence have gradually increased our consumption of coffee.

But that first time, man, with my mom just looking around my kitchen with an expression of slowly-increasing horror, her smile growing more fixed and false… She ran out to the nearest Tim Horton’s and was absolutely perplexed by them, since they’re regional and residually Super Canadian, but got herself some coffee and the savage beast was soothed. The rest of the visit went well but I learned then. You need a coffeemaker.
