Safe amid the bosom of family, working like a dog on sister’s farm and related business. Hard work, but I am feeling so much more alive doing it, surrounded with family. Last night my two little sisters and I sat out in the workshop making wreaths and kissing balls (a regional thing, a sphere of greens), and instead of holiday music we listened to a Google Play playlist of Club Hits and made ourselves cry laughing talking about farts and murder and old jobs and ex-boyfriends (specifically, the one sister’s ex-boyfriend who’d briefly had a job making kissing balls, who had been terrible at it, and so she had taught herself to do it properly so he’d still get paid). And the one male family member who showed up to help was the cat, Reno, who spent a very long time finding a box he could get into and fall asleep, and was determined to do so even though he didn’t really fit. There is a photo, somewhere.
I don’t know that I’m particularly good at wreath-making either, but I am free to experiment, can rearrange my work space and work flow to suit me, and enjoy the company, and it turns out that goes a long way toward making a job enjoyable.
