I actually really like “her” for BB-8, because if I can seize on an opportunity to put more female characters in star wars then damn it, I will. (Even if they are inanimate objects.) But I’m good with “it” too! I’ve sort of adopted the view from @bomberqueen17‘s “Home Out on the Wind” that most droids are good with “it” and most pilots use that for their astromechs, so it’s standard operating practice—but BB-8 has more unique programming and prefers “ey”
I do think that writers have to be careful when using “they” or “it”, because I’ve definitely read sentences where it’s not clear what’s going on because in context those words have multiple referents.
