I’m having this tricky time writing characters (especially Finn, let’s be honest), because I’m reading all these great and interesting fics with really well-thought-out versions and interpretations of the characters, and I have to keep reminding myself “there isn’t a right and wrong, your source material had literally none of this information, you’re all making it up, you’re not failing if you don’t fit someone else’s headcanon, and also you can write a completely different version in the next fic, so focus on what this story needs right now.”
I relate very hard to this! My reaction tends to be “but X has written [basic scenario literally thousands of fanfics have used each in their own unique way and I loved reading all of them] SO WELL that I CAN’T WRITE IT NOW, I have to tie my brain up in knots to come up with something DIFFERENT, there can be NO HAPPINESS or SADNESS or BLOWJOBS or SEX or NOT SEX or ANYTHING”
