@millicentthecat I’ve always felt like, “well WHY are they “evil”? Just because someone said so?“ For both Star Wars and other series like the Inheritance Cycle.

I really like having those discussions.  You know, I grew up in a place where religious violence was totally a thing, where you could get beat for being queer or jewish or pagan.  “Trash” and “sinner” were slurs that bullies chanted while they literally beat you.  When I was 14 I was asked to leave a friend’s birthday party because her mother found out that my parents were pagan and that made us “servants of satan.”  So I wince, a little, at the posts on my dash that say “gentle reminder that the First Order is objectively evil!”  That’s neither gentle, nor a reminder, nor objective, nor is it a conversation about ethics and violence in film.  It’s a drive-by attack.  It’s a statement of values that, in its very claim of unimpeachable objectivity, is invocative of a historical context of bullying and abuse.  “Evil” is being used as a slur, to Other, like any other slur.  It’s being used to say: “this person deserves violence.”

And people absorb that stuff.  Like, the whole dark side of the fandom is so rife with this language like, “I’m trash, I’m bad, sin sin sin!”  I understand why, but I wanted to go a different route with the Dark Side Positive posts.  Maybe just to say, “hey, I don’t think you’re evil…and no one deserves violence…”

I dug up this post because I’ve been feel sad about religious violence, these last few days.  For all the obvious reasons.

I can’t the difference between the self-hate people perform to defer shame and the other-hate people perform because they really believe that expressions of sexual preference are transgressive behavior.  I’m not sure there is a difference.  It all sounds like “we’re going to hell for this.”
