I should find the post I made a while back about the terrorist watchlist though. Our “terrorist watchlist” system in the US is– it’s nothing. It’s actually nothing. My dad was on it for a while because he has a common name. He was simultaneously a US Army officer with Top Secret clearance. They never did double-check that. He went through some crazy hoops so that he could fly on airplanes. Nothing was ever explained. We don’t know whether they took the other guy with his name off the list too.
I hate that the Gun Control thing is so needlessly-inflammatory that we will whip ourselves up into a frenzy over any damn thing. What I want is some meaningful way to track violent offenders and threateners, and not a “terrorist watchlist” that consists of– literally no published criteria.
I’m not against gun control at all, but we keep winding up with, like– I mean, in NY State, we have the SAFE act, wich is the single most incoherent piece of legislation ever concocted, containing actual meaning-obscuring typographical errors, and written with no understanding of who owns guns or why. And like. I get the frustration and upset– I’m fucked-up over orlando, the only reason everyone’s been spared my tearful memoirs about gay club sanctuaries is that I’m so busy I’m not on my computer– but like. A lot of people own guns, and it is not universally true that it’s “insecure guys compensating for their dicks”– there just literally aren’t that many psychologically identical people in the nation for that to be true– and so maybe that’s not really very helpful rhetoric?
But mostly I’m just horrified about this arms-wide-open rush toward encouraging our government to more wholeheartedly use this “terrorist watchlist” that has literally no rules governing it. I’m terrified of that. I’m really terrified of that. Take away people’s guns or whatever, I don’t want to die on that hill particularly– but in what way does anyone really think that this “terrorist watchlist” is going to be responsibly administrated? ?????
