You know, I always assumed this was common knowledge but I never hear anyone else talk about this, so I’m just going to put it out here as a general life-hack. I learned this from my dad, among other Jungle Warfare Lifehack tidbits that have proved less useful (always check your boots for scorpions before you put them on, kids, even though we don’t have those here! Well, it’s saved me from cat hairballs, so).

When you’re working in the dark, or like, you wake up and have to go pee, and you turn on a light?

Close one eye before you do, and keep it closed. (I have one much stronger eye, and one much weaker: I close the weak one, so I can still see what I’m doing.) When you turn the light off again, open the eye you kept closed.

Now you still have some night-vision and will be able to safely get back to where you were, without waiting the whole five minutes or whatever it takes your eyes to adjust.

(You’re driving at night and have to stop and get out of the car? Close one eye while the dome light is on, so you don’t trip when you get out. You’re sitting outside by the fire drinking beers, and have to go inside to get another round? Close one eye while you’re in the kitchen so you don’t trip down the porch steps.)

This isn’t crazy paranoid survivalist stuff, this is just not wanting to stub toes quite so much. But if you write fanfiction, your crazy paranoid survivalists can use it too. :)
