continuing the backstory of Meowvran– Cantarella, noted spy, working in Novigrad, has sent word to Nilfgaard that she needs a young male operative to approach a pair of middle-aged widows who her typical techniques won’t appeal to much.

Maria Luisa offered Voorhis her hand, which he took politely and bowed over, but did not presume to kiss. His body language had gone all practiced-noble-youth, slightly self-conscious, feet slightly too big, and he let go of her hand a bit nervously after his bow and then very obviously reminded himself to pull his shoulders back and not slouch. One could almost hear a governess’s scolding, in his posture.
“You’re so young,” Maria Luisa said, all polish gone from her voice in her astonishment.
“I’m old enough,” Voorhis said, squaring his jaw. “I got here, didn’t I?”
“I mean no offense,” Maria Luisa said. “Of course.” Carthia could hear her bite back a my dear. “I simply had not expected– but, at your age, my son was–” She paused. “Of course.”
Voorhis’s expression softened a little. “I heard,” he said softly, “about your younger– I’m so sorry. A terrible story.”
Maria Luisa’s expression only flickered for the barest instant before she lifted her chin, a small sad smile flitting across her face. “You’re very kind, General. Let me introduce my friends.” (Your picture was not posted)
