I can see the fanon convention developing due to seeing things like Han & Chewie frequently fixing the Falcon, as well as Anakin tinkering with ships in the prequels and Clone Wars, and Rey enjoying piloting and engineering - in the SW galaxy, there’s a VERY strong association between flying and fixing/piloting and maintenance that doesn’t really apply to our world. The convention was probably further strengthened by ideas about how the Resistance is a scrappy, all-hands-on-deck, cash-strapped enterprise, not a fully-fledged command-structured military.

No no n o no it’s CANON. It’s expressly canon that pilots fix their own craft.
It is CANON. That’s what I’m flipping out about.
So this is my attempt to reconcile canon with, like, reality. In reality, how the hell is a pilot going to maintain a craft????!?!?!
But they say that’s the truth! THey say most Academy washouts are becuase they can’t do the maintenance! Argh.
Anyway. No, I just had to clarify– it is canon.
And like. In the Empire/Order, sure. Pilots were cannon fodder, and with no shields on the craft and no hyper anyway, they weren’t briefed either, you can bet your buttons. They were just sent to go do shit.
But we see Rebellion/Republic/Resistance pilots acting like Earth pilots. Clearly they are higher-level operatives here. Clearly they were at the briefings. WE SEE THEM AT THE BRIEFINGS.
WHen??? How??? Ugh.
