Some people have resting bitch face. I feel like Malachite has resting murder face. It confuses people that she’s also the sort of parent who hangs all her kids’ crayon drawings on the fridge and never takes any down no matter how crowded it gets.
Uh, if dragon people had… crayons. Or fridges.
GUYS. I THOUGHT THIS NEW BOOK WAS GONNA BE A STAND ALONE BUT IT’S THE START TO A THREE BOOK ARC. A THREE BOOK ARC THAT HAS MALACHITE. AND STONE. AND MOON FAKE-FAINTING ON EXHAUSTED JADE TO TRICK HER INTO SLEEPING. A++ WOULD RECOMMEND.
For the uninitiated, a 5 sec fandom guide: Raksura are shape-shifters with interesting politics, reversed gender roles, very sharp claws, and a lot of found-family themes. And dorks.
I recommend the books (links to a rec by me and to the author’s website).
It’s only a two book arc! The Harbors of the Sun is the next book, and it’ll be coming out next year. (It’s finished, ready to go through editorial.) And thank you! Malachite definitely has resting murder face.
Whoops, only two books! My wishful thinking was speaking. :D THOUGH I AM DELIGHTED TO HEAR IT IS DONE.
I am rereading Edge of Worlds today, to get myself in the proper spirit for the 3WorldsTravelers fic exchange, and I am delighted to know it is two books. I mean, three books are better, but the suspense! the suspense! to know it wraps up in two eases the suspense!
but I hope there are an endless supply of Raksura books beyond that…
And YES– I LOVE this kind of character, and they’re rarely allowed to be moms!! Utterly terrifying badasses, and also completely devoted. Somewhere in some hidden nook Malachite has a shelf completely stuffed full of every drawing, macaroni art, rag doll, and school project any of her children (and that includes Shade and Lithe) ever, ever made, and Woe Betide anyone who ever, ever, ever mentions it. (Touching any of it would spell instant death. She would kill you with her MIND.)
