His worst fucking enemy, and there Roche was opening up to him like– like– Roche couldn’t even think of what to compare himself to. Offering his heart on a plate to his own nemesis. It was not only stupid, it was pathetic.

Pathetic, and here he was, washing his own hair and doing a bad job of it. He made himself pay attention, dutifully untangling the curls he really should just shave off. He wasn’t here to laze about, he was here doing a job. He had to take care of himself. No one else was going to do it.

Roche finished off the bath by shaving his face. He normally only shaved once or twice a week, but here he could shave daily, so he did. The hair on his face had started to come in intermittently gray, and he disliked how old and grizzled it made him look. He wasn’t ashamed of his age, by any means– it was an accomplishment to have survived his teens, let alone his twenties, and to have gotten so far through his thirties now was nothing short of a miracle– but that didn’t mean he wanted it to show quite so plainly.

Staving off the inevitable, he thought, examining his own grim reflection in the looking-glass. You’re old and pathetic, Vernon Roche, he added with distaste, drawing the razor up the underside of his chin. And you know what happens to men like you when they get old and pathetic. They get slow, and someone kills them.

Especially if they were fucking stupid enough to literally bare their throat to enemies. Like he, apparently, got off from doing. Like an idiot. (Your picture was not posted)
