update

IDK why this was so difficult. Welllll I’d hoped to update the Roche one, and that chapter isn’t done, and I had this one waiting so I’m using it instead, but I got like Z E R O writing done this past week and i’m posting my backlog faster than I’m adding to it by like, a lot, so that was a minor crisis this morning and i’m generally a bit of a mess today. but I got this done! I got this one out! Here it is! Propelled largely by my delight over the fic covers [personal profile] runawaymarbles https://tmblr.co/m9XrK_d3zf6dHbh3aYIkf6g made, which have been a light in a dark passageway here.

So this is a cheerful chapter, featuring more of Morvran’s adorable little brother, and someone finally teaching Luliana how to fold origami birds.

chapter 21, on AO3 https://archiveofourown.org/works/31289303/chapters/92415418

“A friend of the Witcher,” Luliana said, “was a higher vampire.” Something about this had to be being reported incorrectly.

“He was!” Tarren said, nodding earnestly. “He could fly. They met him in a graveyard harvesting poisonous herbs,” and he was ticking it off on his fingers, “and then when he was traveling with them he reached into a hot fire and pulled out a white-hot horseshoe with his bare hand and wasn’t burned, so he was impervious to fire, and then he appeared in a locked shed in the middle of an enemy encampment, and Geralt said that was when he figured out that something was up with this fellow.”

“What,” Luliana said, startled into laughter. “He didn’t notice the flying!”

“Apparently not,” Tarren said.

“Some monster hunter!” Luliana said. “And here I thought he was quite good!”

“I mean,” Tarren said, with a charming little shrug, “we all have our off-days, I suppose.”

Luliana had to pause a moment to laugh, and then made herself straighten up. “Oh dear,” she said, patting her chest as she caught her breath. “That sounds like quite a tale.”

“It was,” Tarren said, visibly delighted with himself for having made her laugh. But unlike her little siblings, it didn’t make him just repeat the funny line over and over on the assumption that if something was funny once it was funny infinite times. He had some practice at conversing with adults, then. “At any rate, he said the vampire was killed fighting a mage, but my book says there aren’t any known methods to kill a higher vampire. You can cut their heads off and they’ll still survive!”

“There must be some way,” Luliana said doubtfully. (Your picture was not posted)
