If you’re in Boston eating an avocado, that is astronomically worse than the person who just went and bow-hunted a deer that is going to feed their family for an entire year. […] If you’re the kind of vegan who gets mad at people for eating honey, I need to ask you: what sweetener alternative are you using? Because if you’re using agave, the monoculture alone to get agave syrup is awful for the environment—and that’s not even getting into the carbon footprint of how it gets to you and the labor practices surrounding harvesting it.

I am a vegan that specifically focuses on harm reduction and part of that practice is recognizing how nuanced our food systems are. If you are sitting on your high horse thinking that you are untouchable because of your food choices while looking down upon others, I need you to check yourself. Eating local—or even better yet, growing your own food—is phenomenal because not only does it have a nearly zero carbon footprint, not only do you know that the ethics behind the food on your plate are sound, but it will make you think more deeply about other food choices that you are making. Now of course we are all so interconnected by means of our food-ways that there’s no way to be perfectly ethical with your food anymore. […] If you eat things like Just Egg but you yell at people who eat backyard eggs, honey what is you doin? Your egg replacement arrived in plastic. Do not make food decisions based on whether or not you feel like you can brag about them or whether or not you feel like it suits your ego. Make them based on actually minimizing harm to other humans, to other animals, and to the environment.”
