I often wonder if a big part of what allows fascist thought to enter mainstream discourse — beyond the simple fact that liberal democracy leaves the door wide open for it — is that on a cultural level we privilege the emotion of disgust. Feeling the emotion is one thing, but we make a lot of room to allow people to make snap decisions based entirely on that feeling, or wanting to avoid that feeling. So instead of asking yourself why something disgusts you and investigating so that you can make an informed decision you’re encouraged to go with your gut and react immediately — this is especially true when the thing you’re reacting to already faces moral opposition by the people around you. Disgust forms the basis of individual people’s prejudices against trans and gay people, sex work, drug use. We’re discouraged from interrogating where that reaction comes from and are made to assume it’s innate — that even if it can’t be explained rationally it’s still correct on a universal level because the feeling is so strong. But where do those gut instincts come from? Is it an inherent part of humanity, is there something in our genetic code that says porn causes misogyny or trans people are pedophiles or whatever? I think a lot goes into maintaining the idea that those feelings are innate, that we have this instinctual moral compass and that it’s always correct

That’s a really good point, the way fat people are treated nowadays is a very direct example of what I’m talking about. (Your picture was not posted)
