Just saying “I don’t watch TV” sounds pretentious, but there’s a big difference between “I don’t watch TV because I feel that the entertainment of the common masses is beneath me”, and “I don’t watch TV because I’m too busy marathoning YouTube videos of a guy 100% clearing Super Mario 64 without pressing the A button”. I do see their point, but on the other hand the number of people who have replied to a basic, "I don't watch TV" from me with "Oh, of course, Netflix and Youtube, right?" is a really high number and at this point the suggestion immediately sets my teeth on edge. No; if I had meant, 'I only watch TV on my laptop,' I'd have said, "I only watch TV on my laptop."

There's no moral judgment involved; I don't watch TV because 1) I'm really bad at watching things, and 2) I'm too cheap to pay for it. (Mostly that first thing. If I was handed five million dollars tomorrow, I still wouldn't pay for cable or streaming services.) Please, people, do me the honour of believing that the thing I have told you is, in fact, the basic truth rather than some complicated lie based on a misleading statement about which object I use for viewing. D:<

ah, yes, i feel that one.
i don't have the attention span for new stuff!! i don't like the flashy light box!! i don't actually watch shows on youtube-- even lets' plays of games i'm interested in are too much story for me.

Yes! It's like, I'm sorry that you think being able to sit still and focus both auditorily and visually on a single input for an hour at a time is a universal skill, but I'm here to tell you that it's not. I have to be incredibly interested in something in order to maintain that kind of focus! There is no 'casual viewing' option for me; given the choice of watching something kinda vaguely entertaining but not to my taste, or goofing around on the internet doing 14 different things, I will always choose the latter. (Trying to do the former would turn into the latter quickly, anyway! "I'll just check on my pixel pets during this commercial! *never looks up at the screen again*")
