disorienting

So I got in the car yesterday morning and it was 45 F and raining, and I drove for five hours and got out and it was sunny and 67 and Dude had rearranged the kitchen while I was gone.
(Apparently he had last week off work and just didn’t mention it to me. He had also forgotten, and just– didn’t– bring it up– and I’d known he was taking a week off and I’d meant to be in town for at least some of it and like maybe spend some time with him even if I couldn’t take more than like a day off, but we could at least daytrip somewhere or hang out or– well, it’s moot, he had a vacation and didn’t tell me.)
So anyway I don’t know who or where the fuck I am or what it is that I do here, but I’m at work anyway trying to remember how to people.
I stayed late at the farm, stayed through Sunday dinner and then left Monday morning, because the store was closed yesterday, and because BIL had to work Saturday but had Sunday free and had volunteered to start on the cabin.
!!! I know! Starting!! on the Cabin!!!
The plans didn’t call for it but i upgraded the skid material to be pressure-treated lumber because it’s just sitting on blocks in gravel and that particular part of it will be basically impossible to repair, over the lifetime of the house. So we went to Home Depot one morning when BIL was unexpectedly free, and got the pressure-treated lumber, the concrete blocks for the foundation, and an electric hammering machine. IDK what it’s really called, but that’s what it is, it’s a nail gun kinda deal. BIL said if I didn’t buy it he would, and I thought, if I’m making him do all this work for me the least I can do is buy the dang hammer thing. Also I can’t fucking hammer a nail to save myself by hand, so if there’s a machine to do it for me sign me the fuck up.
A nailgun is fucking terrifying, by the way. We ended up with one that takes plastic-collated nails, and it does this high-pitched piercing whine of a wind-up and then slams the nail in so fucking hard that sometimes a spark flies off to the side. It gets tiny plastic bits fucking everywhere. And it’s heavy. And it fucking slams those nails in there so hard and so fast and so loud that you cannot help but stare at it and contemplate what it would do to human flesh. But it’s so much less fucking effort than hitting a nail thirty-five times– these skids were four 2x6s nailed together, times two, to be 24′ long, and it was six nails per two feet in the directions, and like– also we had to nail three of the boards together and then tack the fourth on, because with the 3.5″ nails the instructions called for, there’s no way it would actually hang together, so– we also glued them, even though the directions didn’t mention that.
We’re getting the idea that the instructions leave a fuckton of information out.
Like, the next step, which is to build the platform– you make the frame, square it, then put vapor barrier on top and bottom, then add plywood on top and bottom. It makes absolutely no mention of the question of how you add plywood onto the bottom of a sixteen-by-twenty-four-FOOT frame without pulling it out of square. Please bear in mind that once assembled this platform will weigh over a thousand pounds. Are you just supposed to… flip it over? How? Are you meant to have the Hulk on your contracting team? How good is the Hulk at not pulling a frame out of square when moving it?
Anyway. The plans make no mention of this, it’s just a magical exploded diagram making sure you know exactly where to put each piece. That’s great but how..
We also discussed that we need to name this bit of construction, because BIL objects to “tiny house” because 16x24′ isn’t that tiny, and calling it a shack or shed is also dumb, but there’s already The Cabin on the property. We’ve been absently calling it the yurt and it would be hilarious if that name stuck because it’s super not a yurt. Farmsister suggested “the Yeet”, which I like but also hate.
