Writing a scene and I decided that since the story has an infant in it, she should be in the scene. I sort of intended for her to be very pointed set-dressing.
But then she decided she was gassy and wasn’t going to be peacefully sleeping, and then, well. The scene is like five thousand words long and nobody’s gotten around to the necessary conversation yet because the baby is too busy needing baby-tending and such.
It’s also doing the normal thing that happens to me, where the character does not want to have the conversation I want him to have and therefore prevaricates all around. Most recently, instead of advancing the plot, Iorveth has suddenly realized that he doesn’t know how old Roche is or how old humans live to be and is suddenly seized with the terror that old age will kill his rival before he manages to.
(Because, of course, that’s still the basic foundation of the relationship, in his head.)
Iorveth glared at him suspiciously. “Are you dying, though,” he said.
Vernon couldn’t hold back a sudden laugh. “Gods,” he said. The baby didn’t stir, but he gentled her anyway, repenting of his outburst. “Well, Iorveth, we all die a little every day. No, I’m not dying imminently, I probably have several decades left in my lifespan, you can do your research at some other time about how long humans live and my approximate birthdate and do the math yourself.” (Your picture was not posted)
